Speeds ?

My speed has been steadily deteriorating over the last week, but only on singlethreaded downloads and web surfing. I still get 200kbps on multithreaded downloads (256k package). This is extremely frustrating as I know the speeds are there somewhere but when I use telnet/pcanywhere/vnc or other protocols where by definition you can only have one active connection thread, it crawls like an old 9600kb modem.

Sorry but the Sentech network is still fscked.... Tower 82/12 Mintek may be beter for some *orcs* (grin) but for me it's about as nice as trodding in a pile of fresh cow dung ... and NO .. just because of my "Afrikaaner" heritage it does NOT mean I like cow dung.

As of 9am latency and bandwidth(what was left of it anyway) is GONE.

I just LOOVE how Sintech continues to improve their services for their loyal customer base.

I've set up a cron that runs every 10 mins and does a modified version of the SRT.

Instead of getting DCPlusPLus I get http://tucows.is.co.za/files2/osl2000.zip
It's smaller (130KB), so I don't have to wait for a 2MB file to download everytime.

Will see what the graph looks like after a day or two.

Aha - now I know why I've seen an improvement since yesterday - Sentech finally read the contract I signed and upgraded me to a 256k package. Now I'm just seeing 128k type performance.

A single thread download from tucows.is.co.za runs at 133 kbps. This download ran at a fixed rate (no noticeable variation in speed over the whole download). Looks like each thread on a 256k package is limited to ± 133kbps. Anyone else notice this? Multithread download gets me 200 kbps. Still getting 10% packetloss on "new" 256k package.

When I upgraded to 256kbps the speed was about what you would expect for 128kbps on single thread downloads but it gradually started to slow down. Now I get about 40kbps on single thread d/l's but still get consistent speeds around 200kbps on multi thread d/l's - I'd be interested to see if you have a similar experience, Headend.

garp - The figures I quoted was what I saw this morning at around 07:00. I now have a bunch of my users/employees using the link, so I can't check speeds until evron goes home.

well, i've decided to give this up as a bad job - i'm cancelling. I spent like 15 minutes on the phone with the help desk on Monday night, screaming at the poor sod no the other side...

i thought i'd made it pretty clear that i want someone in a high position to phone me back... i'm still waiting.

so... fck this... i'm getting ADSL. I'd rather sit with a connection that is capped, but at least until then, I have a decent connection. Guess I'll just have to keep an eye on my usage...

i've had enough of this crap, really... this is never going to be fixed... no way...

I know this can actually go on a new topic, but since it is speed related ...

If there is a stuff up with the workings of the towers why then can I upload at fairly constant and fairly high rates on p2p apps but not download at the same constant rate. I assume it would be slower than download speeds, but at least sort of constant. The effect that I see on the graph is spiky with extreme highs and extreme low (0kbps) flat spots. It seems to be more of a bad packet management for download.

kbentz, tried that. I told them in NO uncertain terms that I want Potgieter, Raath or Smith to phone me back - no luck. I'm sure she doesn't even check that email address anymore - too many compliants there...

and? did they help you? are you getting decent speeds?

seriously mail her and quote ticket numbers, complaints, etc. recieved a good couple mails and phone calls from her every day until i was sorted. it all started when i started complaining about no response from helpdesk re my ticket, i didnt really care about the whole damn speed issue it was all about the customer service. and then i think i got too loud and got placed on the baddie list, then the open port issue, then the mail that had all our details on etc etc... so i told them they had 12 hours to fetch the modem, and i wanted in writing from them that i was out the contract, would not be billed at the end of the month and get refunded that R500 fee... they were at my office 9am the next morning to collect the modem. so im out my contract no questions asked. i did however tell them that i still wanted the mywireless service and as soon as they had their **** together and people on the myadsl forum were positive about the product, then i would sign back on immeadiatly

oh! you mean for when I cancel! right. I don't think that that'll be a problem... they're letting people off the hook easily now... I'll jump off that bridge when I get to it, for now, they have until the 26th of August to fix it, if it's not fixed, I'm throwing the modem out the window...

nonroker, I'm also on the 256K package and feel much the same, although dare we hope that the current "upgrades" they are doing on the 256K package connections will improve things? The bulletin board says they will be finished with upgrades by 25 August and that this will affect mostly the 256K packages. Right now I am getting the all time worst speeds ever - it took three minutes just to load this page on myadsl.

Hah, I just did some FTP stuff to my o/s site. 11:00 am. My average speed is about 1kB/s on 128kb/s MW. I guess I should be happy. It's at least twice as fast as the 4kb/s that I should expect. What a ripoff.

Strange thing, at about 1 or 2 a.m. this morning my speeds started flying (on 128k), lasted until at least 6 a.m. Not only was I getting max throughput on p2p, but the throughput rate was *stable*, not jumping around going up and down like it usually does. And to top it off, while the p2p was going I did some ftp uploads to a server in the US and the ftp felt *very* quick and "nippy" (i.e. low latency) ... web pages also felt very 'quick' to load ... basically the whole thing was performing exactly like it had in the "good old days", i.e. in the first month or two that I signed up. Now it's back to normal though, i.e. slow .. I'm not even doing any p2p or anything else, and web pages take long to load. Anyone else notice surprisingly good speeds early this morning?
