I also noticed the nice speed this morning. Now instead of the 4 hours good and 20 hours sucky I want to see 20 hours good and 4 hours sucky.

Looking better nonroker - you're one of the 256K users ?

Yeah...I'm on 256k
I haven't really been home to use the connection. But the SRT has been running [;)]

Latest results:

Average: 9.21KB/s
Maximum: 25.91KB/s
Current: 4.71KB/s

Just as I expected, the bandwidth had to go somewhere, I've always been a user with mostly decent speed, thanks to all these 256k users getting good bandwidth, I'm now only getting 55Kb, nonroker, stop your tests, they eating all my downloads.

impossible.....for the last 10 hours the speed has not gone over 6KB/s at all...
That 25KB/s was 07:30 this morning

Yeah, nonroker's speed tests are sucking my bandwidth as well. ;)

My speeds have actually dropped from the 4KB - 6KB range to lower! 256k package on Mintek - the devil's own tower, that one.

Very strange results I'm getting...

Single thread FTP from IS - constant 2.9 kB/s (a couple of seconds of lots of data, then long pause before next burst) [:(!]
8 thread FTP from IS - Constant 21 kB/s [:D]
Single thread http from tucows.is - 15 kB/s [8D]
8 thread http from tucows.is - 33-34 kB/s (Over 256 kb/s) [:0]

Showing packet loss again, but latency seems better...
Ping statistics for 196.35.72.14:
Packets: Sent = 20, Received = 18, Lost = 2 (10% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
Minimum = 79ms, Maximum = 625ms, Average = 119ms

All this on the dreaded MINTECH! It's definately not tower related.

bah. my side of Mintek still sucks @ss. :(

Headend, you asked about what frequency I connect at - according to MySignal it's 2.53

MySignal says: "Connecting to Tower 82 - nb3 - sig=9% - snl=2"

Kai, you are on a different node. I'm almost due east of Mintech in Kensignton B. Perhaps there is something wrong with your node, or there are lots of "abusive" users on your side ;-)

Headend, you're also getting the "pausing" effect, I see?? It's almost as if on a single thread d/l you do get the full 256kbps but only in short quick bursts followed by a long pause. This would explain why you get almost full speed on a multithreaded download, as one thread is probably always running full speed while the others are in "pause" mode. If each thread is time-sliced this would make sense now why a single thread d/l is so slow but a multi-thread d/l so fast as the "time-slicing" is overlapping.

Okay this is really weird and definitely indicative of either a badly misconfigured network or something deliberately set to save bandwidth. I sincerely hope they haven't deliberately designed the network to work like this, as it truly sucks. The other possibility that occurs to me is that due to high packet loss, each d/l stream "backs off" after a point, as tcp/ip is designed to essentially slow down when packets are lost, only to resume again after things settle down. So when you run a single stream you get the "pausing" effect but when you run multiple streams, each stream does pause but combined there are always some streams running at proper speed so overall you get the full bandwidth.

Either way, the result is a connection that sucks.

Kai, which side of Mintek are you? I am in Fontainebleau. My connection also sucks - the last couple of days have really gone downhill.

Latest on the running SRT:

For the last 24 hours:
Average: 8.12KB/s
Maximum: 23.41KB/s
Current: 5.87KB/s

What's interresting...something changed yesterday at about 14:00.
Since then the graph is smooth as a baby's bottom....the problem is, the speed is ***. I'm on 256k, and since 14:00 yesterday the SRT won't go over 8KB/s

I'm seriously getting fscked over here [:(!]

nonroker,

when you say smooth, you mean that it isn't spiking and then idle?

have noticed a sligh increase in bandwidth on SRT, however, browsing seems to be slow at times.

on 512k package 26% signal

K...now that yesterday's 23KB/s on SRT is out of the 24 hour graph, here's the results:

Average: 6.56KB/s
Maximum: 8.69KB/s
Current: 5.46KB/s

arf9999, what I mean bby smooth is...every test runs about the same speed. Previously one would run say 20KB/s and the next test would run 2KB/s etc. Now it's a constant 5-8KB/s

This is really pissing me off. I'm paying for 256K yet I don't even get 64K speeds..and that for the last 24 hours..which means even in the early hours of the morning it's still slow....

Since IS service was down I've had k@k speeds, 128kbps to say the least, plus, checking 3 email accounts at once makes them time out?

Sentech, 99% downtime guarunteed!

Well, here's my experience with the devil's own tower (Mintek) over the past few days (I have a test scheduled to run every three hours):
(date) (min) (ave) (max)
20 August 43kbps 47.75kbps 57kbps
19 August 29kbps 62.83kbps 137kbps
18 August 27kbps 66.00kbps 121kbps
17 August 55kbps 75.40kbps 93kbps
16 August 19kbps 69.29kbps 84kbps
15 August 51kbps 86.17kbps 207kbps (yikes, what did they do! Quick, take the bandwidth away!)
14 August 33kbps 62.88kbps 114kbps
13 August 34kbps 89.29kbps 162kbps

Okay, from looking at my figures, what is clear is that sometime between 09:00 and 12:00 on the 13th my bandwidth went. The entry for the 15th is skewed dramatically by the single period where bandwidth was available.

Currently downloading from unxutils.sourceforge.net at 5.5 - 6 KB/sec on 128k package

Been off the air for a while, since my modem fell and the aerial broke off. R450 later....

FWIW, my usual tower 126 Hurlyvale nows seems to be no 50.
