I'm bored right. So Ive done a speed test from my place in Zurich to the Speedtest.net server in Jhb and I get this. Can somebody on a 4mb DSL connection do the same speed test but to the Zurich server. I just want to see if there is a big difference. In my mind the results should be fairly similar as it's basically the same route. Right?

I have always noticed that as far as latency is concerned for traffic going out of south africa, to and from the same machines, I guess the outbound international half circuits arent as contended as ours incoming lines are

Let me guess you have the 100mb/s option?

I guess you'll get much faster results on an unshaped line. The latency is too high to overseas servers to get good results on speed tests, since the TCP window size can't be adjusted properly before the test is complete.

Thats why I downloaded a 4GB openSUSE ISO file instead, until it peaked at 28MB/s :D

Who me? Hell no! I have a 10mb cable connection that is about to be upped to a 25mb connection for less money each month. :D You gotta love promos that make your current packages cheaper, even with upgrades. You have to be in Zurich proper to get the 100mb fibre connection. I live a little out of town.

Blerry hell! What connection have you got????? :wtf:

I was on a 1 Gbps LAN connection which was connected to a 600mbps Internet connection (University of Stellenbosch).
Here's a screenshot of my openSUSE download: http://www.zoopy.com/photo/2k55/28mbps-via-seacom?browse=3xyt
And here's the MRTG graph of that day's Internet traffic, which peaked at 468mbps when I was downloading @ 28MB/s (from a server in Italy) and my friend sitting next to me was downloading @ 7MB/s (from a server in Belguim): http://www.zoopy.com/photo/2fs9/seacom-daily-mrtg-graph?browse=3xyt

Eventhough I'm on this 600mbps connection, the latency to Zurich or any other Europe country for that matter, is quite poor: 250ms+

I think the speedtest servers are top of the ISP's shaping exclusion lists
