Springboks vs England 2012 - 3 Test tour

I would like to see your response to the fact that Aplon is not a specialist fullback. Lambie has probably played just as much rugby at fullback as Aplon so your point is moot.

Umm,
Yes he is, he started out at Fullback and still plays a lot of games at fullback, the only reason he plays wing is because of his pace and it’s difficult to leave someone like him out of a team. JP is injured for those who did not know.

"Lambie has probably played just as much rugby at fullback as Aplon so your point is moot", that is probably the most retarded thing i have heard all year.
Really people, please know your facts before making stupid statements

Sorry but playing fullback for the u19s/high school/ even Currie cup team does not really count as fullback for the Boks.

O wait sorry, following your way of debating Spies is a wing, Morne Steyn a inside centre etc etc....

Aplon is a utility back, or did I miss him playing in the no. 15 jersey all year for the stormers and the Boks last year?

He has played Fullback for the boks in the past, look it up
He has played fullback for the stormers in the Super 14/15, look it up

His favorite/preferable position is fullback, he plays wing because Joe is a beter fullback than himself,
I have said it before, my 1st choice fullback is Joe Pieterson, 2nd choice is Zane, 3rd choice is Francios Steyn, 4th will be Aplon.

Who do you think is the faster/more explosive player, Lambie or Aplon?, who has more experience at fullback between Lambie and Aplon?, i would even go on a limb and ask who do you think is beter as the last line of defense, Lambie or Aplon?
Did any of you watch the sharks/Stormers game?, Lambie’s inexperience on fullback got exposed.

Ag, but im not in the mood to argue, i rate Lambie highly and i hope he makes the nr15 jersey his own, would have just liked to see him play fullback more before playing in a very unfamiliar position on the biggest stage of all.

i agree with you on your choice with pietersen being 1st choice. i think lambie's positional play at fullback is lacking on international level and abit slow. only advantage he has is his kicking ability.

Um I don't know if you know this but when Lambie first came onto the seen he played fullback for the Sharks, he has played for the Boks at fullback and acquitted himself during the World Cup. Again so far this year Aplon has played what 2 games at fullback, just as much as Lambie has. The whole way your argument is structured is just flawed.

A solid team, I'd just put F. Hougaard on the bench and start with Pienaar.

I personally like Lambie at fullback and I think that if he plays that position provincially and internationally for the rest of his career he'll be the best in the world in that position within 3 years.

Seriously, there is no term I dislike more than "utility back".

1) He has played Fullback for the boks in the past, look it up
2) He has played fullback for the stormers in the Super 14/15, look it up

I will now attempt to help you:

1) Really? Wow.... He has played more games at wing for the Boks than at Fullback. Look it up. ---> http://www.sarugby.co.za/playerprofile.aspx?id=37000

2) Spies has played wing and Morne Steyn centre as well as Habbana flanker because of a yellow card for the sub flanker.... does that make them a wing, a inside centre or a flanker? No.

3) Frans Steyn's favourite position is Flyhalf and has expressed this many times saying that he dreams of being a flyhalf. Tough shlt, he isn't.

4) Aplon but WTF does that have to do with Aplon being a fullback? Or should we move shane Williams to Fullback? How about sonny bill? Seriously....

5) Lambie:
"Patrick Lambie is a professional rugby union player who plays for the Natal Sharks in the Currie Cup and Super Rugby.[2] He attended school at Clifton Preparatory in Durban before attending Michaelhouse from 2004–2008. He represented his country at the schoolboy level for his last two years of school. He was head boy and captained both the rugby and cricket team in his final year at Michaelhouse.

Lambie is capable of playing flyhalf, centre and fullback, and was the leading points scorer in the 2009 ABSA u21 Currie Cup[citation needed] despite only turning 19 later that year. He represented South Africa at the u20 level when he was selected for the squad, and was utilized extensively as the first choice fullback during the 2010 u20 World Cup in Argentina.

Lambie broke into the Sharks senior team set up in the 2010 Super 14 season, where his debut was spent in the fullback position. He was shifted to centre in the 2010 Currie Cup and due to injury was required to fill the flyhalf birth. Due to his natural talent and unwavering nerve he made the position his own and was integral in helping the Sharks reach Currie Cup success in 2010, including scoring two tries, three conversions and three penalties in the Sharks' 30-10 win over Western Province in the final of the tournament. He was awarded with the "Man of the Match" award in the Currie Cup final. Lambie was also the second highest point scorer in the Currie Cup."

Now add the games at Fullback for the Boks....

6) Both have shown they do not lack defensive ability.

7) Erm.... ok. That is your opinion. I do not agree.

As I said, Aplon is a utility back / wing that can play full back, at best. He is not a specialist fullback. Lambie could be as he is younger and has more time as well as the fact that, if it was not for a forced move he would have been left at fullback.

I rate Aplon highly, just not higher than Lambie at fullback.

StevieG I am still waiting on your answers to my questions above... or are you just going to play cheerleader?

bwa ha ha ha
no comment for now

Look, they very different players.

Lambies more of an all rounder, kicks the ball miles and is a good back up goal kicker to Morne, defensively he has proven himself more than once and he's quite dynamic on attack. Lacks experience though.

Aplon only kicks when he really has too. He is devastating on attack, sound on defense and under the high ball, despite his diminutive demeanor. Lot's of experience but his size is his Achilles heel. Like Lambie, he is a versatile player hence the decision for some coaches to pick him at 15 and others at 11/14...

Personally I wouldn't mind seeing Aplon start ahead of either Lambie or JP.

He is just such an elusive runner. He is so easily under estimated on account of his size but given space he can run angles and produce side steps that are impossible to defend against.

When you pwned you pwned...

It's only Aplons lack of a booming boot that prevents him from being a great fullback... IMO anyway...

its not the end of the world if you can't punt the ball down halfway of the field all the time. its all about being a consistent player IMO.

Then he should be a wing. The whole point of a fullback is having someone that can kick back and put you in a good position to attack from, sure some times its advantageous to attack from the back but that is in the minority of times. Show me one good fullback that doesn't have a good kicking game.

Ja, I agree. Just saying.

If he had a booming boot he may not have developed into the running back that he is.

I love the little guy.

3-4 seasons ago I was very critical of the Stormers decision to play him in the Super 12, thought he would get murdered. Every game he started I thought it would be his last. How the guy hasn't suffered a career ending injury by now is beyond me. Have nothing but respect for him and his abilities on the rugby field. Great player!!

Possibly one of the best ever didn't, Christian Cullen. How was Serge Blanco's kicking game? I reckon it's becoming less essential in the modern game. How often do you see Israel Dagg kick it? He's got a prodigious boot but prefers to run it...

I kind of disagree with this. One of the roles of a fullback is to get the side out of trouble and that means gaining ground by long accurate touch finders deep in the 22.

I'm a firm believer in the fact that each position has a few basic jobs they need to do first before you take other factors into account.

A fullback needs a great boot, ability to read the game, physical presence in defence as the last line and speed to take advantage of gaps on offence as well as being good under the high ball. It is a specialist position.

Yes but when you have a fullback that can exploit the space they so often find themselves in....

From that video you posted I count maybe 3 tries that could of been scored from him running it from the back. He seemed to play like more of a winger, which is where Aplon should play. As to Dagg, have you not seen him play, he does kick it a heck of a lot. I remember an interesting statistic that showed that the Crusaders kicked the ball just as much as the Bulls do. The fact that he can run doesn't mean he is a great fullback, its that he can kick accurately and far as well.
