Sprintnet Review - Midrand Kyalami

Hello

Move from Cape Town to Midrand this year. Was shocked by the amount of estates which did not have land lines. I started my search for a WISP in November by which I organizes with Bitco. Bitco came the first week I arrived and found limited LOS even though the house next to my neighbour uses them and practically has the same LOS.

This lead me to look at alternatives, which I contacted Neotel and Sprintnet. I organized with Neotel and 12 business day later after I filled in the forms they only contacted me for site survey. With Sprintnet I contacted them and within the same week on a Saturday they came to do LOS test. That same tuesday the installation was done.

I took the 4mb uncapped option at R897 per month with year contract. The only downside to Sprintnet is that there is no reduced installation cost at about R3500 and no month to month option. I know Bitco reduces their installation when taking year contract to R800. Further more you have to buy yourself a router as it is not included which cost another R400 ( Totolink R150A ).


As for the speed, I am very happy. At first I had problems with latency and spikes connecting to Dota 2 servers in South Africa. Within a day the problem was resolved. I am please with speeds as it generally stays within what is expected. I have had no downtime that I noticed during the various power outages which can affect other network stations. Only downtime I notice is at 3am in morning till 3h12 about when the internet goes out. Assume some maintenance gets done each day or something.

All in all, Sprintnet is definitely a choice for you as a consumer as a WISP in Midrand. I was very hesitant about Sprintnet as I could not find much on mybb or other forums about the company like others.

Small update:

Internet has gone down about 3 times this month for 2-3 hours. Service response is about 1-2 hours of them calling you back in weekdays. Always friendly and helpfull. Internet speeds is very nice and torrents is also great speeds.

Still happy with Sprintnet as ISP and better downloading than Afrihost 4mb I had in Cape Town

Well a bit late for you but Comtel have a good foot print in the Midrand area and no contracts but with an option of spreading the equipment costs over 12 months if you want.

Are those speeds achieved on your 4Mbps package? And how often are you throttled on the line?

They do not show like Afrihost when you are throttled or if in any manner. The contention ratio is 1:20. I have noticed over weekends slower speeds, but generally I am very happy.

Yes those are speeds with the 4mb package at R897.

My torrents lately has been extremely quick, beter than what I can get on Afrihost with no throtteling or shaping. This week got 956kb/s download on a popular torrent. I have never gotten above 350kbs on Afrihost 4mbs.

Network problems are occurring more often. Been offline for 6 hours today. No updates and call number States it doesn't exist. Getting frustrated
 
8 hours after incident finally got an update after posting multiple tickets. Sprintnet could not get access to the building on which their tower resides. Clients will just have to wait till the morning before anything can be done.

Sprintnet Internet speed + latency is brilliant, however downtime and general client support / followup is a concern.
 
Getting a lot more downtime on almost daily basis. Getting to point where I'm taking a log of downtime. Will post end if month. Internet speed and latency still great when it's working.

Going to start looking for new wisp, maybe bitco has new site for better coverage for my area although sprintnet FUP is better.
 
have to agree with you - had multiple issues with sprintnet / previously kawuleza in the RHK area.

Maybe look at Level-7 - they have centurion coverage, and could possibly expand towards midrand if you ask nicely :)
 
Ditto, Sprintnet (Kawuleza) started out brilliantly at our previous place in Bedfordview, only to crash and burn spectacularly - when they weren't firing their technies we had complete downtime and when we didn't have downtime there were numerous latency and speed issues (experienced by both myself and our neighbours).

Level 7 didn't have coverage in Midstream Hill hence going the Bitco option, recently had one or two challenges but when holistically viewed still 1000000x times better then any other full WIFI product offering (can't however comment on Level 7's service and product(s)).
