Spur Steaks Suck!

Thanks Neinfeshen & I.Am.Sam

I'll try those suggestions. I dont usually have the pan on very hot first - i put the meat in then turn the heat on.

I also tried Microwaving it first to get the inside cooked and just brown the outside in the pan but it was still very tough.

not sure if trolling or not ...since when did anyone put something into a pan and then put the heat on lol

Eh? I don't think that's how it works. It's actually pretty difficult to mess up a steak as long as you control the timings and the heat. The factors that differentiate a mediocre from a great steak are, for instance, the quality and aging of the cut, the sauce, the char, and the pink line. On all those fronts, a Spur steak is passable at best.

The sauce was snipped out of a plastic packet and microwaved. The cut and quality of meat are basically indifferent. There are no stages to the cook, so the sear is greyish and the interior is uneven. You're acting pretty bolshy for someone who clearly doesn't know very much about steak.

Again, this is all just opinion on your part. Spur Head Office and their chefs would disagree with your opinion and I would tend to side with them. Those factors that you mentioned are all present in their steaks and thousands of people enjoy them every day. Granted you may have had a few bad steaks at Spur in the past, and if that is the case I don't blame you on deciding not to go there any more. But that doesn't mean everyone's experience is the same as yours. You can't project your experience onto everyone.

It's not just opinion on my part. If you ask ANYBODY who really knows steaks, they'll say the same. If you blind taste tested a Spur steak vs a higher quality - let's say Hussar Grill - steak, you would immediately notice the difference. Spur steaks just don't hold up to any objective standard of quality. If anything, the only one guilty of subjectivism here is you.

Tens of millions of Big Mac are sold every day. Does it make it filled a good beef patty or does it remain a blend of bones and cartilage aggregated together?

What the execs who sell crap think and the fact that people buy it does not make it a good product. A sellable one at best.

Big Mac's are the greatest burgers ever made especially with bacon and I will fight you if you disagree.

Reverse sear is the best way to cook a steak, bar none (well, perhaps apart from a sous vide). You can get a very precise interior with little trouble. 25 -30 minutes in the oven at 135c (set a timer on your phone), let it rest for 10 minutes while you warm up a pan or grill, then slap it on a searing high heat. It's much more forgiving and controllable than doing it straight on the pan/braai.

Must try this, assume you use a meat thermometer with it -any recommendations for one?

I didn't use a meat thermometer last time and it came out fine. I have a food thermometer but I'm not even sure of the brand, tbh.

Easy...
Double Whopper with Bacon....
Bring on the fight my son.
One test tube patty burger against another test tube patty burger :wtf:

Eat a real burger ffs!

Grab an 'Original Royale' from Hudson's, a 'Fab' from Jerry's, a 'Sweet Child O' Mine' from Saint's or an 'Uncle Morris' from Royale Eatery and educate yourselves heretics!

Artisanal versus mass produced...apples versus oranges.

Not stating a preference there - just pointing out the difference. The only burger I eat that would qualify as fast food is McDonald's Grand Chicken Spicy...that's a good burger.

Well yes, but the first claim I quoted talked of the big mac being greatest burger "ever made", that opens it up for comparison. Such a lofty claim doesn't belong in the same sentence as McDonald's or Burger King.

Only fast food burger I'd eat is a King Steer and even then I'd feel dirty afterwards ... but not as dirty as eating McD or BK :D

You feel dirty with all fast food burgers... they're all rubbish...

McD's is drunk food in my opinion (only cos they're open 24hours mostly)

I agree, McDonalds burgers for me. Steers ones just taste like that sauce has been injected all over the burger, bun, pickles.. everywhere.
