Spur Steaks Suck!

I still love Spur steaks. If you get a steak that's bad, send it back. But hasn't happened to me in years.
I guess people think it's cool to hate on Spur now, but I haven't jumped on that band wagon.
The only thing I won't eat are their chicken wings cos they are so dry and tasteless.

When you order a steak from Spur, just ask for no basting. Tell them only olive oil, salt and pepper.

Not one to be ordering Steak from restaurants, seeing as I come from free range beef country, but seeing as I was in the heart of North West beef country, I ordered a 500g lazy aged steak at the local Spur...

Holy crap! WTF excuse for a piece of vleis was this?

First time in my life that I do not eat the entire steak.... The taste, what on earth flavour meat is that? I for one shall never be eating steak in a Spur again..

/Moose rant over....

You guys braai Biltong, don't lie! No steak anywhere.

Joking, but not about the braaing biltong, which btw is faking AWESOME!. Yea, when I ate at Spur a long time ago, I used to get the hot rock instead. That way you do the steak yourself. But it's all factory meat. So not going to beat free range anytime soon :p

so are they steaks with that sauce and never done the way you want

I found Hussar grill disappointing. Either it has gone downhill fast, or I'm better at making my own steak.

It just seems like really low grade meat for R200. I don't understand why they would not at most pay retail of R40 for the best meat and still make massive profits.

I see they're part of the Spur Corporation.

Shut your whore mouth. I really like Hussar Grill. I've been to an "original" one in Cape Town and a franchise one in PE and the food at both was great.

They're not terrible, but I think that lately their only draw card has been 2 for 1 specials, not food quality.

I do quite enjoy their Texan fried chicken burger though.

Actually like that burger as well, especially the Clearwater one Umhlodti

Was almost forced to a spur tonight, but i did strategical lobbying convincing a colleague and a partner to go to a much better local restaurant instead.

I went to BBQ workshop in Kyalami - new centre, they have a special 1kg ribs for R119 yeah, you read that right, R119 (sunday. monday and thursday)...there is also the rock there that I will try on Thursday, similar special on the ribs and if you had an endless appetite, then Capital craft have bottomless ribs today for R180.00

and yet people go to Spur:confused:

The original Hussar Grill in Rondebosch and the one in Stellenbosch are both top notch for quality. It's INSANE that there is only a R20 difference between the Spur's rubbush 500g aged rump (R169) and Hussar Grill's (R189).

Is it really that good?

I have the Local Grill, the Grillhouse and Turn n Tender closer to me than Hussar so I never tried but keen to if it's worth it.

I eat at the one in Rondebosch probably once a month. I've done Butcher shop & Grill, Carne, Fatbutcher and honestly the steak and game meat is just as good or better imo.

I'll give it a try soon, then. Thanks.

I went to a local restaurant in Potch last night, ordered me a fatty 500g rump to seek redemption.... From the Spur fiasco...... Agh!No! What the hell do the restaurants do to the steaks, pepper crusted, med to well was grey dry..... Better the Spur , but nowhere near what I can cook myself at home.... Tsk!tsk!

That's the whole reason why I stopped considering Spur... when their prices were similar to Hussar Grill.

Although this is Hussar Grill Willowbridge... the steak used to be as good as it gets. As you can see by the rating - in line with the other branches.

Now at least 3 times since 2017 - rubbish. Won't be going back.
