Hi there

I'm looking for and SSD just for my games

Specs as follows

i5-2500k
r9-280x crossfire
corsair ax850w
60GB ocz vertex 2 for os

So the thing is that I want my BF4 to load faster and maybe other games too. So i want to know what size and what is the cheapest ssd I can get away with. I was looking at getting either a 64GB or 128GB SSD. Now the thing is my board doesn't support 6GB/s as my cpu is still sandy bridge and it's running from the integrated intel chipset and my cpu doesn't have that. So just looking for something cheap reliable. I feel any ssd is faster than HDD duh but yeah suggest me some

so far I was looking at this but for what I'm going to do I will even go cheaper if can. do I really need 128GB?

Kingston SSDs are quite cheap and reliable.
Im sure the sata3(6 GB/s) drives will work, just not at that speed but its a good future proof buy for when you eventually move over to Haswell.

60gb is not enough.
You'll fit your operating system and a game or 2 but no more.
128 would be a better option if you want to future proof your system.
But if it's not for os and just for games then 60gb should be ok.
I'd still go bigger though.

Like I said already have 60GB for just OS

I am also looking at the 120 Samsung Evo TLC and benchmark wise it performs quite similar to the MLC Samsung's in terms of longevity and speed. Looks like very good value for money. The lifespan of ssd's are linked to size from what I've read.

CPUs have nothing to do with SATA. Your board has 2 SATA III ports that should work just fine.

I got the Samsung 840 Pro 512gigs. Bf3 and Bf4 takes up 61.8gigs already. So if you want SSd for gaming and only looking at bf4 loading time then a 128gigs would be sufficient. Otherwise if you have the ability to get a 256gb get a 256gb.

Also been using my 840 Pro for about a year now. Still working like a baws!!

As for Satat II and III you won't see much of a difference at all.

ok so you telling me that sata 3 will work without Ivy bridge cpu

SATA and USB are part of the chipset or on extra controllers. Make sure you have the latest chipset drivers.

My SSD runs perfectly with a 2500k on the 6Gb/s port on the Intel controller on my P67 motherboard.

would it make sense to get 2 90gig ssds in Raid0?

compared to buying a bigger(more expensive) one.

And keep in mind that samsung manufactures it's own SSD chip sets, checkout this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2pEyUeqZupI

Ok so I read up about that. They last 3 times as long as they state. Also when I game. I will only install the games that I really feel have long load times like BF4 and maybe some minor other games. While gaming I believe I will do reading mostly and that doesn't impact the life expectancy of the drive. So the only thing that worries me is the size. I don't want to go to small or to big just the right size for the job. Like I said most of my games that doesn't have long load times or games or that I don't really care about load times will still be on the hdd. The only thing for now I will install on it will be BF4 and maybe test 1 or 2 other games out to see the benefits. The thing is I will never to 10-20GB per day. Maybe more like 1GB per day average.

I had my 60GB SSD for about 3-4 years now might be longer and still ssdlife tells me that I have till 2025 or so left by the amount of writes I do currently

How long are your BF4 loading times.
I have a similar setup to you and they're not that bad imo.

There are still a handful of liteon ssd drives on bid or buy, 256gb for R1600, I have one and it maxes out on my sata2 connector.
BF4 loads nice and fast now

not that fast but sometimes it can be slow. Nothing like super slow just that sometimes when I get in they took 3 points already. I have a fast connection (10 ping and lower to server) so no issue with server connection. I can see the map loading into graphics memory and it's a bit slow sometimes.

AAAh ic, primarily related to MP and actually entering the game slower than other players.
I thought it was more a matter of you not liking the wait.

I'd say if you really have no choice then go for the 60gb but you really should consider bigger or you'll just be buying again.
I am currently in the same situation.
Deciding what size to buy.

120gb is minimum I would consider.

Those SSD on Bid or buy looks good. Cheap and it's 256GB and MLC based so should last a long time and so on.

bidorbuy (not always available).

You can also check out carbonite.

you know what in the end is it really worth at all. I mean I would love to be able to load before anyone else but spending R1600 (I know it's a good deal) for maybe just 1 game is a bit much. wish my mobo supported caching then i couldn't added like a 32GB SSD to do the caching for the hdd.

it's not like bf4 is taking forever to load. I can manage the load times sort of just the fact that you get people already loading in before me and taking 3 points already. Maybe if anyone else know of a tweak to make my bf4 load faster
