Star Citizen

Is the update released? I see lots of people playing but am not sure if its coz they have an early release version or not.

It's people playing the PTU build. I've been messing with it a bit myself; it's pretty amazing so far.

Live release shouldn't be far.

Check your emails SC backer people, big AWS (Amazon Web Service) partnership with CIG has been made more public, they've even dropped the Cry Engine logo and now have Amazon Lumberyard.

I'm interested to know what that means for us latency-wise in SA. Anyone who's played Star Marine on the PTU (which is live to all backers now go go go...) will know we are getting 260 to 300 ping to the few Alpha servers in the states that are available for playing the Alpha of Star Citizen as of now.

Are Amazon going to be putting data centers on the ground in SA? Will we finally get a local experience latency wise one day in Star Citizen? Some one local more versed in AWS and cloud stuff needs to enlighten us on this exciting news. The way I understand it, there were AWS servers in SA then it'd be the equivalent of having, for instance, a Battle.net Africa Gateway instead of just EU, NA, Oceanic etc.?

It's an interesting development. I doubt AWS has plans to put something down in SA, but we can live in hope... Hopefully we'll at least be able to connect to th EU servers which have much better ping than to the States.

Here is the announcement, for those who don't have the newsletter:

There is one other big announcement we would like to make with the release of 2.6. We are now basing Star Citizen and our custom technology development on Amazon’s Lumberyard Engine. Since the beginning of the project, we’ve had to make a huge number of changes to the CryENGINE code and tech to enable us to deliver Star Citizen. While the original CryENGINE had great strengths in many areas like rendering and cinematics the needs of our game were well beyond what came ‘out of the box’. So we have, over time, changed significant parts of the engine for our technology, such that only a baseline of the original engine truly remains. In the future we will continue to make significant changes to AI, Animation and Network code and systems.

When Amazon announced Lumberyard back in February 2016, we were immediately interested. While based on the same baseline technology as Star Citizen, Lumberyard is specifically designed for online games, utilizing the power of Amazon’s AWS Cloud Services and their Twitch streaming platform. Amazon’s focus aligns perfectly to ours as we’ve been making significant engineering investments into next generation online networking and cloud based servers. Making the transition to Lumberyard and AWS has been very easy and has not delayed any of our work, as broadly, the technology switch was a ‘like-for-like’ change, which is now complete.

As an added benefit Amazon AWS data centers are spread around the world from North America to South America, Europe to China to Asia Pacific, which will allow us to better support the many backers across the globe as we scale up Star Citizen.

Finally, Amazon has made Lumberyard freely available for anyone building their own game. That means that technically-inclined members of the community can have a better view 'under the hood' of our game than ever before. It's also a great path for anyone interested in game development professionally; I fully anticipate that in the coming year we will be hiring programmers who have taught themselves using Amazon's Lumberyard resources!

As we move forwards, we are confident you will see great benefits from our partnership. Amazon will bring new features to Lumberyard to assist in creating online persistent games, adding great support for their products like Twitch (which we use extensively) and of course investing heavily in engine research and development for years to come. We could not find a more stable and reliable engine partner than Amazon, so with this partnership we are sure we have secured the future development and continuing technical innovation for Star Citizen.

Also, in case it hasn't been mentioned, 2.6 is LIVE:

So how is everyone holding up?

Very curious as to how this all pans out.

It cannot come soon enough...

We're into the Evocati release window now, although I suspect next week is more likely than just before the weekend. We'll see what the updated production schedule says tomorrow.

Ye, I haven't played 2.6 is ages, not much to do once you've done it all. I'm excited that I'll at least be able to run small amounts of cargo with my Avenger as it has some cargo capacity.

I'm really hoping the Aurora cargo box will be ready to use, otherwise I'll need to find other things to keep me occupied. Walking around those procedural moons, for instance...

Some cool footage from Gamescom showing off some of the tech from the upcoming alpha.

From 1h4m45 they drop a guy from high orbit and try to catch him again, pretty awesome.

By the time they release that game intergalactic travel will be a real thing and humans will be waging wars with aliens on distant planets.

I'm happy as long as they keep providing regular patches for Star Citizen, it's been a bit long since the last patch but going to be their biggest patch to date (solar system sized).

I'm more antsy about getting my hands on Squadron 42 as the development progress on that is much more of a mystery.

Probably the best Citizencon presentation this year.

The event was a whole day affair with different panels by developers which were really good.

It was brilliant. They've only gone and developed the tech to build Coruscant. No biggie.

Oh by the way, the December holiday livestream will finally provide those SQ42 updates we've been waiting for.

Pie in the sky... never gonna happen :D

Its gonna be such a huge disappointment. No Mans Sky v.2

Is this worth getting in to?

It looks the type of game I've always had in my mind.

Getting into in what sense? It's an alpha,so your just playing the features and seeing the existing bugs.

Personally I'm not touching it until squadron42 is released.
