Star Citizen

A badass trailer, clearly without a release date. As I understand correctly, Squadron 42’s public roadmap will only be published this year around December, that is what people said was stated by CIG.

In my opinion, they are dangling carrots again… I guess 2020 at the soonest, maybe 2021.

Well I'd rather see a trailer than not see one and this is the first time they're revealing certain actors so I'm happy they did. I have no expectations for a release date, it's done when it's done.

It's done when it's done has an expiry date. Remember Duke Nukem forever?

Star Citizen’s latest promise rakes in almost a million dollars
The most successful crowdfunding project of all time now stands at $195 million

How much was that Star Citizen trailer this week worth? Nearly a million dollars.

Donations to the crowd-funded space combat video game, which has been in development since 2012, spiked on Wednesday, the day Cloud Imperium Games issued a three-minute trailer for Squadron 42 from CitizenCon 2018. Roberts Space Industries (the parent company) reported $379,254 taken in on Oct. 10, plus another $600,000 over the next three days combined.

Putting that in perspective, Star Citizen took in $692,406 seven weeks ago, its best in the past two months. The project’s lifetime funding now stands at $195,768,020. Star Citizen is the most crowdfunded venture — video game or otherwise — of all time.

This week’s donations may have shot up because of the announcement of a new ship for the game, the “Anvil Valkyrie.” It costs $330 and does not include access to Star Citizen itself. The Anvil Valkyrie is currently available on test servers and will join Star Citizen’s “persistent universe” alpha module when its 3.3 update launches. There is no launch date for the 3.3 update.

Cloud Imperium Games began sharing a production schedule for Star Citizen and other ongoing development notes back in 2016, but hasn’t committed to a launch window for any component of the game since. Star Citizen creator Chris Roberts at the time said the public and games press “treated my comments nonetheless as a promise.” in explaining why he was no longer giving deadlines or launch windows for his game.

Carrots, anyone?

$200 mil for a alpha LOL! As much as i want it to be happen..... well ya, i doubt it'll get out of beta

I am more concerned that the topic surrounding hackers hasn’t been addressed to date. Those who don’t pay-2-play (or pay-2-win) will be shocked when they grind out a big ship only to have it gunned down by a hacker and so on.

Don’t tell me that there won’t be hackers, it is a plague in any game.

No, in-game insurance is by no means a cure.

Is there any current guestimate on when 3.3 is gonna be released to the public? I saw it was on 3.3.s recently or something..does it need to go to Z or something?

Has anyone been getting "CIG error 15006" after the new patch? I got it a few times, managed to get in after fiddling with some things. Then I got disconnected and got that error again and couldnt get in after that...sigh

It is an acknowledged error on the issue council and I contributed to it, just wondering if anyone else is also getting it? (It seems to be an old error which has come back after the new patch.)

Not personally but it seems to be affecting a lot of people, there is even a meme:

Lol..

I spent most of this morning on their forums and have some stuff to try when I get home, its seems quite random because people all over the world with very different specs encounter it. I was able to play for about half an hour twice and the performance is so much better than before

EDIT:

The fix I did worked, for anyone that has a similar issue let me save you some headache: Start the game with taskmanager open, when the game launches look for SC and when it shows as Not Responding end the task, SC will pop up with a red icon and then click on re-launch game and I played literally for hours without any issues.

I also added the below to my hosts file for public.universe.robertsspaceindustries.com/AWS servers as below, I did a dig on them and they are all AWS servers, you're welcome to doublecheck.

Star Citizen's singleplayer Squadron 42 expected to begin beta testing in second half of 2020
Chris Roberts announced the schedule today, along with a new $46 million investment into Cloud Imperium.

Star Citizen boss Chris Roberts looked back on some of the game's big events today's likely-year-ending Letter from the Chairman update, including the addition of its first planet, the first major landing zone, and 32 new flyable ships. He also announced a new private investment of $46 million into Cloud Imperium, on top of the $211 million it's raised from fans so far.

Roberts also said that he expects the singleplayer Squadron 42 to be ready to begin beta testing in the second half of 2020.

"When we started the campaign for Star Citizen and Squadron 42, I said that the crowdfunding would go towards development of the game, and that the amount would define the scope and ambition of what we were working on. That is a commitment I am proud to say we have been upholding; its why we have over 500 staff around the world working on the games and have spent very little on marketing," Roberts wrote.

But marketing will become more of a priority as the game approaches release, and needs to compete for gamer eyeballs with games that have "tens and, in some cases, hundreds of millions of dollars of advertising behind them." The most common solution to that particular problem is a deal with a publisher, but "I am not in favor of putting my destiny in the hands of a third party," he wrote.

Roberts said he doesn't want to dip into the crowdfunding well again either, even though Star Citizen is still actively crowdfunding right now. That led the studio to pursue private equity and venture capital investment, which ultimately led to the deal with Clive Calder, the founder of the Zomba Group, and his son Keith, head of the film production company Snoot Entertainment.

"This investment helps secure our independence. We may not have the resources that an Activision or EA have to launch one of their tentpole games, but we now control our own destiny in marketing Squadron 42, especially as we have a secret weapon: all of you!" Roberts wrote. "Between the power of the best community in gaming to help get the message out and these additional funds we will be well positioned to enable Squadron 42 to enjoy the success that it deserves."

The need for that marketing money, at least to advertise a completed game, is still a long distance off, however: "The same caveats will apply to the Squadron 42 roadmap as they do to the PU [Persistent Universe] one, but our plan is to be feature and content complete by the end of 2019, with the first 6 months of 2020 for Alpha (balance, optimization and polish) and then Beta."

...

So is this a good time to jump on board the SC train?
I have been playing it a lot lately, they've fixed a lot of the performance issues. You just need to be really patient with this game, nothing happens quickly..(Like going from A to B is not as straight fwd as you would expect)

If you want to try it out I can give you my account details. Dude this game is so far from being done - I'd buy it when it comes out in the next 3 years. At least that's when I suspect it will be a functional game. At the moment it's a "lets stuff around in a tech demo" game.

Depends. If you're looking for a complete game experience then no, if you want to try out a pretty epic space sim that has a lot of missing features still and you'd like to follow the development then yes. For the right type of person you can have a lot fun with the game right now but it's still not a finished product by any stretch of the imagination.

It is still quite an amazing experience though with the fidelity of the game, just the amount of detail that goes in is fascinating. Also every new patch to see new things come in is always a treat. Performance now is so much better than it was at the beginning of the year when it was really unplayable for me, now I get 60+ fps in most places except for some places like Lorville and Levski.
