So I watched the new movie out and I thought it was pretty awesome, it inspired me to watch more Star Trek.

Now not ever having watched any Star Trek before this in my life, I would preferable like to start from the beginning, being Season 1 I guess?

I asked at a video store and they didn't have it... Does anyone know any video stores that will have it around Durban, preferably somewhere around the Hillcrest/Kloof area?

Dude the series is nothing like the movie. The first star trek is in the 70s or so. The movie was good but the series are really horrid.

Star Trek The Next Generation is nice :)

.. and very long, with looooads of boring episodes.

My suggestion pooky (and this is coming from someone who has watched them all), perhaps dont waste too much time on the earlier flavors of Star Trek yet. Wait till your appetite has been excited more, older flavors are more bland (with the occasional gem).

If I was you I would start with Star Trek Voyager or Enterprise (the latest series), after I had finished those I would watch Deep Space 9 and then only move onto The Next Generation.

If not you are going to sit through hundreds of hours of yawn fest.

+1

Voyager I enjoyed, as well as Deep Space 9. The later Star Trek movies are also good.

The new Star Trek is a Trek for the modern audience. Classic Trek (ie: Kirk, Picard, Janeway and Sisko) is allot different. You have more conversation, less action and its a totally different flavour.

My suggest to "slow your expectations down" would be to follow the series backwards. I would suggest Voyager first (The series is the best in my opinion, since it had the most "moral conflict" or "no way out" episodes. Then Deep Space 9 is a nice alternative. There are more bad episodes in DS9 than Voyager, but still a worthwhile watch. The Next Generation started in the late 80's and went into the 90's with Picard and co. That series laid the foundation for the "next generation" of Trek fans. Lastly, you will have the "Kirk" days, which was made in 1966-68 which are now available in a remastered edition (albeit quite expensive). Be prepared for a lot of cheesy costumes and acting, but that was what the 60's was about :)

I live in Forest Hills, and have DS9 / Voyager seasons. I dont think you will be able to rent them anywhere :S My next purchase cycle will be to get the TNG series complete from Amazon. They retail for about 13-15 pounds on www.amazon.co.uk

PS: You could also try watching the Movies (TNG characters) backwards : Nemesis, Inssurection etc -> The best Trek Movies of the classic era was unanimously voted as : Wrath of Khan (Star Trek 2) and "Undiscovered Country" (Star Trek 6, which is my personal favourite) :)

But can one watch them in a different order? Won't the story be all messed up?

Soo wish i could get every episode of ST.

I also started at voyager, and you don't easily get them at a video shop your best bet would be pushplay they seem to have ST Series.

If i hadn't started at ST: Voyayer i don't think i would be hooked today, cause like everyone says the next generation(TNG) you have to get into.

Not really Pooky, each "Series" has its own timeline and there is a few "cross section" episodes, but nothing that will upset the balance and enjoyment of the Series

Only really in relation to the Borg. But then you have to follow the movies as well because there is a point when Picard was assimilated.

Star trek enspired many "inventions" The automatic sliding opening doors was first seen on star trek. They ad people behind the screens opening them. This lead to the doors we now have at shopping centers. Then the personal cummunicators inspired the development of cell phones.

Go Google it as there are many more and good reading.

I like the concepts i.e. time travel and how to interact with other life forms.

Yes the special effects are stale by todays standards but in their day they were ahead of reality i.e. sliding doors cellp phones and even talking to computers.

How come you only got to see it now??

Enjoy

Have a look for Star Trek: Enterprise it has some good episodes in the first couple of seasons. And timeline wise does start at the beginning more or less.
