Yup, many of the ideas come from the books. I enjoyed the stories of Lukes Academy. Im sure that will be brought into the story line in the future. If I remember correctly the academy is actually written about by several different authors.

It's an ancient light saber. Not a new one. Think of it as a shiv and you get the idea. The sith is from 5000 years ago so it's way before the the fancy ones that darth maul used

Darth Maul was episode 1 - the earliest of all the Star Wars movies. The Force Awakens is set 30 years after Return of the Jedi. I don't see why the technology in episode 7 would predate anything we've seen thus far.
