No, SA has healthy cellphone market, lots of competition, to call them a cartel is just not accurate.

RICA is good, less mobile crime. It used to suck, self rica is nice, almost too good.

Well, Trump himself referred to SA as a shithole country. Some people say that everything that he says is true.

But seriously, there are many place in SA that do not have any internet availability.

For example, I have in-laws living near Hoedspruit that have very limited internet. Apparently someone provides internet from some mountain top, but it is R2000 per month, and very unreliable.

Also know of someone in the Cape.

This statement that everyone has access to mobile is just not true, and it can also be very expensive.

Exactly. Starlink is for 8th world countries. Doesn’t belong in South Africa.

The South Africans who bought it only did so because they thought it was cool, but not because they actually needed it. They have many options when it comes to broadband.

President Trump is misinformed, South Africa is a nice country. I mean the new GNU Government is awesome.
So many things getting done, Im gonna give them another year though but so far I like the changes I am seeing in service delivery.

This is true and is in line with my experience. When I moved to CT I had to struggle, eventually just moved to another area where there was FTTH, but that took 2 years. Some people in this thread live in la la land

There has been a substantial decrease in the number of households that don’t have access to the Internet in South Africa, the 2022 Census shows.

In the previous census conducted in 2011, 64.8% of surveyed households said they did not have Internet connectivity.

There were an estimated 14.4 million households in South Africa in 2011, which meant that roughly 9.3 million did not have access to the web.

In the latest count, the percentage of surveyed households without Internet access shrunk to 21.1%.

The Census 2022 estimated that households had grown to about 17.8 million, which suggests that about 3.8 million households do not have Internet connectivity.

From another perspective, the number of households with Internet in South Africa grew over three-fold — from less than 5.1 million to 15.8 million.

Households that only access the Internet from their places of work or elsewhere also decreased from 10.3% to 5%.

Whereas only 16.3% of households said they had a cellphone or mobile device in 2011, 60.5% had one in 2022.

There was also a slight increase from 8.6% to 13.3% of surveyed households who said they had a home broadband connection — working out to about 2.4 million homes.

The graph below from Stats SA shows how people’s access to the Internet in South Africa has changed since the last census.

Analytico’s 2022 South African Fibre Report showed network operators passed about 3.9 million homes with fibre — which is one of the most popular forms of home connectivity.

By June 2022, the ten biggest fibre network operators (FNOs) had roughly 1.3 million connected customers between them.

The outstanding households from the Census 2022 could be accounted for by those using alternative broadband products — like LTE, 5G, fixed-wireless, DSL, and satellite packages.

But your Area already had Satellite broadband, expensive yes , but it is there
and these companies actually comply with our laws and contribute towards our economy.

The thing I struggle with most is what problem is star link solving, that requires us to modify our laws, just to accommodate star link , and so far I have not seen a convincing argument. Just opinions based on limited personal experiences.
 
@LadyTitania , I'm sure there are plenty of those in such need here but you should just know that the last Census was considered a dismal failure, not accurate at all and scoffed at by many professionals.

Hihi, I am not going to debate the numbers of stats SA.
I'm sure someone can also find many professionals that believe in the contrary. If its good enough for Stats SA it is good enough for me.
