Hey Guys,

A little confused as I'm going through the process of starting a site.

My Domain name is okay and all that and since it is a brand new site I am thinking of going with the "beginners" package with afri-host.

You Get:

300mb Web hosting
300mb Server Storage (I won't be storing much on the site anyway, mostly text)
5 email accounts
and cpanel 11 (I have no idea what this is)

As you can see I am a newbie so i am using iWeb to create my site and then I can just publish it to the FTP server.

I just wanted to ask is 300mb web hosting an OK amount?

Please fill me in as I'm totally lost :)

Thanks!!!!

depends what you want to do with it, but for a standard site with images and text, 300mb is more than enough.
Have you looked at using a content management system- wordpress, joomla, drupal? if you go that route though you will need an package that includes an sql database

i'd say go with Wordpress and yes you'll need a MySql db

Check out some of the offers at www.Gridhost.co.za - pretty affordable and decent service.

cPanel is like a management area which allows you to create email accounts, databases and other 'behind the scenes' stuff related to your website.

If you decide to go the route of a CMS (and require a MySQL database), or want a slightly more 'premium' package, let me know. We have some great packages for just that. Drop me a message and I'll sort something out for you... Cheers!

Smartweb welcome :) Glad to see you're on the forum - always had great experience dealing with you guys so I'm sure it'll be even better now that you're hanging around here too!

Hey Guys thanks for all the info!

I am using iWeb to design it, so far so good with that program.

I wanted to ask whats the difference between using the cheaper linux hosting and windows hosting :)

Linux hosting is the far more common variety. It's cheaper because it's open source, as opposed to Windows which requires web hosts to pay licensing fees. If your website (for whatever reason) requires specific Microsoft technologies, such as ASP or Microsoft Sql, then Windows hosting is the only way to go. In general though, I'd recommend Linux hosting any day of the week over Windows hosting. For starters, it's more secure, generally more stable and you're bound to be getting more bang for you buck. Plus, there's a reason all the major international hosts only offer Linux hosting... ;)

Oh, and congrats on your 1000th post ;)

Hi Kevrsa

300mb will be enough for a small site, but some hosting companies use the 300mb for your website and email storage so just check on that.
Also have a look at http://www.web-telecoms.co.za as they are running a promo on their entry-level package which has 700mb storage and 30 days free hosting.
