Starting a vegetable garden.

The interwebz seems to think its cabbage worm (is the most common). Larvae of moths and butterflies and can be devastating.

On a further note I planted 1 broccoli and 1 cauliflower seed outside in a pot to experiment. After 10 days there was not even a tiny speck of green so I planted some more in half toilet rolls standing in a tub in a northwest facing window. X 3

Then I "planted" some more of each in damp kitchen towel and placed those in plastic baggies.
Then went further and stuck some tomato, chillies, peppers and cucumber in paper too. I felt brave while doing this!

While the toilet rolls contain sand and will take a while I place them under a warm lamp at night until bed time.

Last night I opened a few of the kitchen towel planters. Some have started sprouting roots!:cool::cool:
So now the question is do I wait a few more days until a leaf or a stem appears? Or do I transfer them to half toilet rolls or directly out to pots ASAP?

By now It's been 16 days since first planting the 2 seeds in soil. And I saw the tiiiiiiiniest little leaf peaking out above the soil where I stuck the brocoli in.

But yet kitchen towel, damp with water, into baggie and on top of the fridge, in a box, where its always warm. Seems to be quickest "pop out" time....

I looked at everything again earlier.
Most progress award goes to the broccoli. Two days ago it was a "popped seed with a tail". Tonight it closer resembles a miniture pale version of an egytian cobra ready to strike, they have now gained a really really tiny head. I will check every day now, but I think I might have to transfer the successful sprouts to soil, but keep indoors for a week, once it has a green "top" I will then transplant out to pots.
My whole veggie garden will be in pots except the tomatoes and cucumbers. They will creep so cleared a small space of the scaped garden so I can erect tripod or trellis or something....

Hahaha :p
I'm not popular for that...

Some help with okra plants. It doesn’t seem like a lot is happening here but I am a novice gardener. I planted some okra and they seem to be suffering from something, I am not sure what though . IMG_3063.JPGIMG_3062.JPG I have inspected the leaves for pets etc nothing.

Would also like to know.

The problem with vegetables is you don't want to spray poison on them. The Margaret Roberts stuff doesn't work - for me at least.

Seems to be quite popular with pests.

While I still have a lot to learn about veggie growing....

From all my reading up I would start first with a weak sunlight liquid solution in a spray bottle.

Spray underneath and on top.
Maybe keep spraying every few days and then see if the plant growth improves after say 10-14days.
If not you might have to look at something stronger...

Triss Marigold ...

Wormwood (yes, it's a herb) is also a very good deterant to many pests.

Celery, parsley, butter lettuce, a red lettuce/forgot the name), brocolli, capsicum baby pepers, yellow pear cherry tomatoes, cucumber, birds eye chilli, black cherry tomatoes, mint all coming along nicely. Parsley is slow to sprout but finally on the go.

Then another lettuce and also some hybrid tomatoes, all going. Also some others going nicely. Not home now so can't check the names.

Then I cheated. :oops::giggle:
I bought strawberry seedlings (3 in a little black plant baggie)
I will plant them each into a pot so they have room to expand and be merry.

Lol, all my veggies I planted from seed except the strawberries. I also cheated and bought seedlings. They doing quite well.

Then I can feel less guilty for stressing.

This heat keeps wilting the rocket. So now I moved the pot to full shade. Will see if that helps. Maybe it will do a bit better once its stronger/bigger.

Anybody know of a good book or website advising on pests and diseases in the Garden.

I always struggle identifying pests. I have mostly mint thyme rosemary lavender tomatoes chillies roses. And a curry tree plant.

From what I've seen there are many sites with lots of good info the problem is that each site can't cover every single plant out there. So its best to research your plants and then to find sites that has a lot of info on your plants.
Then search again on the listed pests.

Yes, there will be a lot of reading required.

Broccoli(3) and cucumber(2) babies.

Planted them into bigger sized small pots this afternoon. Will give them a week or so and will then plant them out. Brococoli into bit pots and cucumber directly into the garden. DSC_7560.JPG

The rocket "unwilted" itself after an hour in the shade.
