Stations seek cheaper boxes

Ja, these things can't be all that difficult to make. R700 was it in the previous one? way too much. Free would be better :D R200 is acceptable.
 
Is there anybody who would use the online services? The money government would spend on "online" services could be used for better broadband and PC penetration. Subsidize eee pc's!
 
"Online Services" = Government & Political propaganda. Why else subsidise something like that into the bread-line of people with a low income, whom should be more concerned with proper shelter & food?

The DoC must really think the middle-class and up are idiots...

DSTV costs R399 + metal dish + R20p/m = 5channels (SABC x3, etv, Boptv)
New Box cost R700 +++ = 4channels

... lets play spot the difference!
 
Why do you even need additional services. Besides what would these services typically be - something along the line of the DSTv info / program guide?

DSTV is crap Mpeg2 quality..... DTT is gonna be GOOD MPEG4 quality......which would you choose.

Well thats all thoeretically speaking - Mnet will prolly send the same crap Mpeg2 picture over DTT so they can say that DSTV is the same quality and not loose subs that way.

True but using the same bandwidth you can have better quality. So far I know the new dstv decoders are mp4 capable.
 
I bought myself a Dual TV tuner card for my PC on friday.
Set it to Digital and found that there are 9 channels on offer.
SABC 1, 2, 3
E-tv 1, 2
SABC International
SABC Entertainment
SABC Education

But it only worked untill the sunday.
the cardcost me around R300.(Came with built in FM tuner too)

The cost is understandable; they've got lot of stuff to cram into that box; pinhole camera, microphone, transmitter...

Whats working now? ...and what's the quality like?
 
So, over and above the cost of your TV license, you now have to purchase a set top box, which is only (I assume) going to be subsidised for the poorer sectors.

Now, even if you don't want to receive their cr@p, because you're using DSTV, are you going to have to purchase/get one of these devices? Or pay for one even if you don't use it?
 
No you won't be forced to buy one. But it would be a golden opportunity for government to do away with the TV license rubbish.

Another thing I just realized: very few of the people who will be subsidized for decoders have valid TV licenses.

And I fear the new channels the broadcasters are planning will be rubbish. Our market will remain the same so more channels will just split the existing money for content more.
The only times the public broadcasters are up to standard is monday night on sabc 3,how i met your mother on e and pasella/top billing. So a lot of room for improvement.
