Steam Deck unveiled

Did anyone try to import one?
+1, anyone got the Deck imported? What would be the cheapest way
I lost my Graphic card this weekend on my gaming pc. My mobo does not have any display ports. Running headless now.
My pc is 10 years old, GPU was 7 years old. Probaly time for an upgrade.

I am waiting for the
Neo 2 Geek, i think it'll be easier to import when its released.
I don't think its possible to get the steam deck anywhere at the moment.

Ja, I just saw posts on twitter, people who pre-ordered last year, will get theirs in October 2022. Hectic long wait queue.

Pre-ordered 64GB model on 18 July 2021 using VPN(Tunnelbear I think) and US steam account for $5. Got the reservation email on the 25th of July 2022, completed the purchase. Was $425 USD to steam since the address supplied was in the state of Florida so it attracted tax, used MyUS.com for shipping. Shipping cost with DHL in total came to $195 USD. Breakdown of MyUS fees to follow

Inbound duties : 22.50USD
Inbound taxes : 68.31USD
Shipping: 72.44USD DHL Express

The rest were miscellaneous items like extra padding, additional packaging, photos of the item, fragile stickers and obligatory insurance of 12USD.

At the time, MyUS was running a 30 day free trial for the premium membership so I used that although I don't think it affected any of the costs

While waiting for it to arrive,I purchased a 512 Samsung NVMe 2230 from Geewiz for R1000 (product no longer available if I click the link) and have a dedicated Samsung 45W PD charger just for this.

On arrival I made sure everything worked before cracking her open and replacing the SSD.Once that was done I created a steam recovery image and reimaged the device.
It wasn't daunting at all except my hands aren't what they used to be and those screws are tiny as hell lol

Unfortunately haven't really had a chance to really test drive it due to work commitments but I plan to this weekend.

Also looking at dual booting windows for those games that don't play nicely with SteamOS ( or mainly just to tinker around)

Sorry for the bump..

How'd you do the payment if you don't mind my asking?

I've been trying to buy one of these and I managed to create a US steam account using a VPN (protonvpn) so that part's figured out, and intending to use a myus.com address, the problem I'm having is with payment as Steam detects that my payment is coming from another country so they won't process it (I tried via paypal).

Hey man,

I used my FNB CC and that went through the first time. The other option you have is to load the account with Steam gift vouchers however I'm not sure what the maximum is that you can load at a time though.
But yeah, FNB credit card was fine. To clarify I wasn't using a VPN when doing the payment, I was just signed in from my regular browser at the time

Thanks!

I hadn't actually tried that.. Just tried it now with my FNB CC but it failed.. Think the problem might be the billing address which it asks me to enter, if I try enter SA address it wants to change the store country to SA and if I enter the myus address there it fails, presumably cos that doesn't match what's on my CC (dunno if it actually works like that just guessing).

I did think about vouchers, just not really sure where to get US$ vouchers and also was thinking that if steam cancelled or refused it then I'd be stuck with a US account full of $ I can't get back.

A Steam Deck rival, ASUS ROG Ally, appeared,

It being a ROG product it will be premium priced. I doubt that they will launch a TUF version. Nice though.

Yeah looks really cool, like the fact that it runs windows opens up a few more options.

Handhelds seem to be getting more and more popular. I'm all for it!

Who's next...Sony re-entering maybe?

Sony is likely to re-enter, but I think they will place more emphasis on cloud gaming because they have already invested a lot in the 'cloud'. In my view, it is more likely to see a handheld similar to Logitech's, but better.

A Sony handheld with some capabilities of the PS5 will be insane imo. They already have the all expertise, I think they'd be stupid not to be looking at it.

I think where they might struggle is indie support, ton of indie games available for Steam/Windows that are not on PlayStation. Might be wrong but Nintendo also have strong indie support

Xbox Series S is basically the same size a really large hand held, all they need to do is make it run cooler and with lower power usage and strap a battery and screen on it. :p

Yeah PSP was awesome back in the day, with the current technology I am sure they could put something together
