Ive just installed Half Life 2, all 5 cd's
Then downloaded Steam and now it is updating
any reason why it keeps on updating Steam and just goes back to 0% then starts again?
Im planning on playing Source online
what would i have to do after updating steam?
Thanks!

You are going to have to wait a very long time for steam to update HL2 now. The amount of and size of the patches that have come out over the years is huge. Can't remember how big, but dont expect to be able to play it today at the very least... Not with Telkom's slow download speeds.

Is there anyway to update steam/HL2 offline? or at least download the patches from a server? (@work)

I want to install my copy of HL2 again (New PC) and I don't want my whole cap to be killed in a day?

Thanks,

now its says connecting to steam, and been like this for like an hour
does everything just take long?
cos Im pretty sure its just frozen
thanks!

You could copy someone's installation files, run steam and create another account with your new CD Key.
Currently my installation is 7.23Gb.
Haven't played in ages.
Perhaps I should update and play this evening. :p

I was rather impressed with Steam's performance. I saw HL EP1 for $9.95 (R72) and decided to buy it online (beats any shop ATM). That night, started download (1.5GB @ 384kb) and it was done by the morning.

Played it when I got home.

PS I haven't touched HL2/CSS in years now, but fortunately did an update couple of months ago though.

If you got the game of the year edition then you wont have to update alot. Also, i have been geting troubles with steam all day, so restart afew times if nothing helps. To check if its frozen go into task manager and see if its responding.

ive tried everything, it will try connect, but will go on forever until it freezes, and when i finally get into steam i update then it freezes again
sometimes i run steam and it doesnt even pop up, but says it is running
any ideas?
THANKS!

Steam can be really frikkin' slow to get stuff done. Just leave it.
Don't always assume that a program that is marked 'Not Responding' has frozen. Just leave it alone and it should get things done.
Like I said, it's slow.

The easiest however is to let a friend make you a backup which you can run. I did that for 2 friends and it saves a lot of time and bandwidth

Just leave it, it will finish updating eventually (I had the same problem quite a while back). Although I do agree with PearlJam, just copy someone's game, delete the ClientRegistry.blob file and then run Steam.exe
