Stellenbosch ADSL congestion?

Anyone suddenly experiencing congestion on the main Stellenbosch exchange in the evenings? Tried IS based and MWEB accounts, getting just under 2 Mbps max on my 4M line. Line stats have not changed at all and they remain static throughout the day.

Post a tracert to 8.8.8.8 so we can see if it is congestion.

How about posting those line stats for us? Also, tracert at different times of the day. I won't be surprised if it is congestion, all the students coming back from holidays and downloading the internet on the shared uncapped connections.

... On the other hand the next appointment day for a Telkom install is in March. Suffice to say there is considerable demand for DSL in Stellenbosch.

My ADSL in Stellenbosch is still running perfectly. 1mb uncapped account.

Our ADSL in Melkbosstrand, not so much.

Pretty much what it always is. I will assemble a bunch of traceroutes over the next 36h or so.

Cluver Street, so a bit higher up away from the exchange in Alexander street. Anyways, my stats are still the same, but downloads rolling at 3.5 Mbps now.

I'm in Cluver street. There was bad congestion last year but everything seems to be good now. I will check the latency tonight.

Testing a Plugg uncapped account now, same problem. I don't see any latency problems on the first hop:

It is pretty much like that all the time. Either way, I am down to 1 Mbps during the day/evenings this weekend. Must be the rainy weekend. Line stats still pretty much constant. Woke up at around 6am this morning, internet was rolling at ~3.4 Mbps. So there is definitely something coupled to the time of day and I doubt it's line noise related.

Trace complete.

I'm monitoring my latencies 24/7 in Zabbix and I had a quick peek at the past week's latencies and they were fine except for the times where I downloaded stuff.

Lastly, the first hop (to your router) should always have a very low latency. The second hop (to your ISP) should also be low, unless the exchange/DSLAM is congested. Congestion is also dependent on the time of day/week! According to that traceroute of yours, I'd say that there is little/no congestion at all.

Yes, sorry, I referred to to the first hop as the one after my RB750. :) Anyways, yes the latencies are perfect 24/7, so why the poor speeds during the day? As I type this, 7:24am, my speeds are fine again.

Ja, I would say it's congestion now. Getting about 250kbps on my 4M line at the moment.

My latencies returned to normal later the day and my speed improved to about ~1mbps. I only see terrible latency when the speed drops to half that. I have tested this with MWEB, IS and MTN backbones, and the problem is like clockwork. Sundays are especially bad. As I am typing this, I am getting almost 4mbps. This evening I should be down to 1.5mbps or so. I can't see how the problem is not at the exchange/IPC peering with everyone.

Yeah, Sunday evenings are especially bad. Last week Sunday was OK, but the week before that was just as bad as last night:

I guess there is insufficient backhaul in Stellenbosch. I see Telkom is laying more fibre in town though...I hope they plan on upgrading the backhaul before giving everyone VDSL. :/

alternate sent me 'n PM and he is also receiving poor performance now. Worth it to just start complaint-spamming?

I spoke to some guy in a Telkom van splicing fiber an hour ago.
Tried to shift the blame on MWeb, then I said its the same on my WA and SAIX accounts.
He couldn't do anything and just said thats its normal for peak times when everyone is using the internet!

The fiber was for another project and we will not be getting VDSL any time soon.

I hate Telkom. I have the same problem in Durban where the internet is unusable from 7pm to 11pm. This is how it started there, soon ADSL will be useless here.

I've recently started having issues with my ADSL, so I guess this would be it then. Maybe time all of us called Telkom to complain?

It's already begun

As I said in this post dealing with the congestion in La Lucia, Durban. You can escalate the fault and complain to ICASA.

Did he elaborate on what that project is? Anyways, this is bull****, we should just start spamming them with complaints over and over.
