STOP using hazard lights in fog

The more lights you turn on the worse your visibility will become. The idea is to light up the road underneath the fog with your foglamps.

On another note WTF to the bumfaces who drive with rear fogs on at night!

But I'm going on a detour again. Let's leave everyone to argue about the hazards in the fog situation before your engine overheats...

When you crash into somebody when their hazards are not on cause you could not see them........then its a crisis
 
Interesting, was in some thick fog recently on way to PE and found that the cars in front of me using hazards and not using fog lights seemed to light up the fog, I do think its helps others see you but couldnt help wonder if it actually made it worse using flashing orange lights?

Exactly.

It's the same with headlights/brights - the high-up diffuse light actually decreases visibility by sending light in a million directions through the water drops.

Fog lights are low-down (were the fog is less dense) and create a tighter, more piercing beam that allows you to to see what's ahead of you. Rear fog lights are also brighter than brake lights and have that same narrow, piercing quality that allows them to be seen from further away - hence increasing your vehicle's visibility.

Hazard lights are simply not designed for improved visibility in fog; they have the opposite effect.

It is. I remember reading this in CAR magazine a few years back. Fog lights actually blind oncoming motorists in the same way that brights do, for the reasons I mentioned above. You can (technically) be fined for using fog lights in conditions where visibility is normal.

Somebody made the point earlier that cars with poor head/tail lights should switch on their hazards for better visibility. Cars with poor head/tail lights should not be on the road at all until their lights match legal requirements. Obviously in a poor country such as ours this is not always easy to abide by (or enforce) (yay Japan for outlawing 3y.o. cars :p).

In my experience: hazards on the highway = a car that's stopped or is slowing down rapidly. Hazards in fog/heavy rain irritate me. You're using the wrong tool for the job. If you don't have the right tool, rather not drive in fog :whistle: :D

Yes so true on this point. It most definitely makes it worse
