Ok, so I got a new pc... however, if I set the graphics to 1280x1024x32 (on warcraft 3) my screen goes all weird, like all I see are coloured lines (going down vertically, they like 1 colour either pink, blue, green or grey and then black and white).

The same problem happens with FEAR when I'm trying to start up the game. what could the problem be? I'm using windows xp home ed. sp3, and my pc specs are in my sig

what screen do you have? maybe that res is not supported?

Does this also happen when you on the desktop when you set it to a higher res?
Have you tried the other dvi port on your gpu? monitors you mean dual or just 1 at a time?
Why I ask is my friend had a gpu that had a damage vga port and we had to connect his dvi port to get his gpu to work.(no joke when putting a screen from screen 1 to 2 when all you can see is lines.)

Im guessing faulty voltage regulator.

I had that problem with my 7900GTX , lines appearing everywhere which cause artifacts

It looks like your video card is faulty.
Try see if the problem shows up in a screen shot

does this happen on all resolutions in game or just 1280x1024 ?

this sounds familair ?
but still, for example when i play dead space the game will run fine and then all of a sudden the screen will go black, or it will go black and then perfectly spaced verticle colored lines across the screen.

this also seem to happen with devil may cry 4, when it somehow goes out of the refreshrate ranges, which if i set vsync on it goes away well 95% of the time anyways.
then you might be suffering from the powerplay bug and if so you might be lucky that one of the fixed bioses might sort it out. but first try and see if it still does that with another graphics card.

that's exactly it! only it happens when I use 1280x1024, but sometimes works with 1024x768

I've been thinking it was my power supply, but the PSU delivers 18A across the 12v rail, which means it can't be that (20A = 216 watts, there's no way it's the PSU).

Hmmm, I'm iffy about the bios update though...

Is the Sapphire HD 4850 notorious for this?
Also, this the Sapphire with a blue PCB and a custom cooler.

well that happend to me with my ati 450 on any resolution windowed or fullscreen at random times. i wouldn't say the bios update is the safest bet you can do, thats why i would suggest try another gpu fand see if the problem persists. if it don't try test with differant psu- you might lucky...

ok, it's not the PSU, i've tried using 4, (400watt, 600 watts, 500 watt, and a 550 watt... all from my friends). So it's not PSU, so perhaps it's the gpu? should I send in the GPU? I mean, I REALLY don't want to flash the bios, after reading your horror story about BSOD's and the problem comes back etc, I wanna avoid it like the plague. I got the card from PC-Int, so would they swap out the card? This problem is very annoying now, i can't play any games, hell, photoshop crashed, and this problem forces me to restart my pc. It's either the vertical lines of death or blank screen of blank :(

its allways better if the dealer can sort it out, rather them breaking it by doing a firmware upgrade wrongly than you. swapout would be best.

question: will pc-int replace my card? I mean, I clearly can't use it for it's intended purpose :(

well if you can prove to them its hardware and not software related they must do something about it if its still under warrenty- that is how it normally works anyways.

Scotty these games, did you install before or after you got your card?

Have you loaded windows fresh? What monitors have you been using?
