Hey guys

i am having a strange problem that has me at my wits end. This laptop running Windows 7 Home Premium does not want to connect to the internet. I get a 'limited connectivity' warning triangle both on the Ethernet and WLAN connections, and I have tried various solutions such as assigning a static IP, System Restore, Last Known Good Configuration, various netsh commands, registry keys and modifications to no avail.

I even resorted to the Windows Fix It and it also did not repair the connection. In short, I am stumped. I am currently downloading SP1 for Windows 7 in the hope that it will resolve my problem.

Also, I have reinstalled drivers but because the problem happens on both the Ethernet and Wireless connections I am thinking it is a Windows fault.

Any assistance would be of great value :)

Tried disabling any antivirus/firewall you might be running?

Oh right, forgot to mention that. I have disabled the Windows Firewall and I turned MSE off through task manager as well. I'm going to install SP1 as soon as it finishes, and see if that solves it :)

Will update here if I find anything! Google shows me that this problem is a regular occurrence, but with different causes such as Antivirus, Bonjour Updater, and Trojans

Some more troubleshooting:
using DHCP?
Do you get an IP address?
Can you ping the default gateway?
Can you access your configured DNSs?

^ this plus
What happens when you are in safe mode?

Yip, using DHCP by default but using static it refuses to assign the IP I give it, yet it accepts the Gateway and the DNS's and the Subnet mask (according to ipconfig). IOW, in ipconfig it says that the IP address is 169.xxx.xxx.xxx, which is not right as I assigned it an IP in the 192.168.xxx.xxx range. FWIW, it says (preferred) after the IP.

I can ping the gateway, and I can also ping the DNS's if I assign it statically. DHCP - it gives me an incorrect IP and subnet mask. Nothing else.

Safe mode - same problem :(

EDIT - I tried running SP1, and got an error. It states that I should run a 'Check for System Update Readiness' tool. Going to download and run that now

Thanks for all the help so far guys :)

Tried the XP TCP/IP Repair tool and restarted -- nada :(

Still waiting for the Readiness Tool to finish with the download. I managed ~400KB/s on SP1, but ~40KB/s on the tool. Gah >.<

Still wondering if an unknown LSP isn't interfering, run hijackthis and quote the log here

your DHCP server isn't working correctly then. Has it got leases available?

There is one I bolded that looks a bit suspect :/

@Sinbad, it does this on multiple networks, so not the DHCP server

HAd a similar problem with my new laptop with Win 7 Home Basic. Restarted router, problem gone. Beats me!

Does you internet connection work? Try browsing with your cell via WLAN.

Hey

Strange thing is had the same problem on two Windows 7 laptops this very morning.

Limited connectivity, could not connect to the web, but the XP pc had no problem going through the same router.

Tried a few things... could not get it to work... bounced the router, turned it off for a few minutes, and both are working fine again.

Do you have a network bridge set up? That normally overrides TCP/IP settings.
Is the static IP you want to assign and the default gateway on the same subnet?

Guys

Found something that might be relevant. The DHCP Client service cannot start

IF I try to start it manually, i get an error 1075: The dependancy service does not exist or has been marked for deletion.

I went to the event viewer and found this in the log: The DHCP Client service depends on the following service: Afd. This service might not be installed.

Looking at my Services, there is no such service (Afd)

Perhaps I have found my problem?

Oh and @Vleis - no network bridge. And yes, the one I'd like to assign is on the same subnet

@Kilobits - perhaps a borked Windows update?

UPDATE - managed to get the DHCP service to start, but still no joy :/
