The story line predates many of the vehicles. The police chief drives a K5 Blazer with a facelift package which didn't come out until the next year, the buses all appear to be from the 90s - especially the bus on the International chassis near the end of Episode 8, which clearly has the 90s/2000s "anteater" style hood.

During several of the nighttime searches, characters use flashlights with modern bulbs (identifiable by their blue-white color and visibly different from the yellow-orange hue of period-correct flashlights). Ironically, if they had all used modern bulbs, the error wouldn't be nearly so obvious.

The Demogorgon miniature featured in the series - a miniature in the Fantasy Lords series produced by Grenadier Miniatures - wasn't released until mid 1984, almost a year after the series is set (November 1983).

Several songs featured in the series and heard by the characters, such as "Hazy Shade of Winter" by The Bangles (1987), we released well after the date the series is meant to be set (November 1983).

Factual errors

The US flag patches worn by the police officers are incorrect. On the patches, the field of stars has too many stripes to the right of it and not enough stripes underneath. On the actual flag, the field "sits" on the fourth white stripe from the top. On the patches, it "sits" on the red stripe below it, the fifth red stripe.

And some trivia.

Millie Bobby Brown had to shave most of her hair off for the show. As can be expected of any 11 year old girl, it was a terrifying prospect. The Duffers showed her how cool Charlize Theron looked in Mad Max: Fury Road (2015), after which Millie agreed to it.

The state trooper guarding the morgue is reading "Cujo" by Stephen King. This is one of the show's many nods to the author's work.

Hopper's trailer reportedly only cost the art department $1 to buy.

Winona Ryder portrays a mother whose child has gone missing. In real life, Ryder dedicated the film Little Women (1994) to Polly Hannah Klaas, a young girl from her hometown of Petaluma, California, who went missing and was later revealed to have been kidnapped and brutally murdered. She offered a $200,000 reward for anyone with information on the subject, and as of 2016 she still remains a strong supporter of the Polly Klaas Foundation for Prevention of child abduction, and aid in the search.

Gaten Matarazzo's (who plays Dustin) voice changed so much by the time production ended that the sound team was unable to use him for additional dialogue recording.

The Hawkins Police Department vehicles and uniforms are identical to those used in Jaws and Jaws 2. This includes the Chief's tan uniform, Amity Island triangle shaped patch, and beige SUV that was worn/used by Roy Scheider's character. This also includes the blue uniforms and trooper/sheriff style hats worn by the patrolman, which also matches the Amity Island Police uniforms from the Jaws films.

In the flash back scene at Castle Byers Joyce surprises Will with tickets to see Poltergeist. The manner in which Joyce communicates with Will when he is trapped in the upside down realm is very similar to how Carol Anne and her mother spoke to each other in the film. Will uses the lights in the house while Carol Anne talked through the television.

The shed where Will disappears has an upside down horseshoe above the door, which signifies bad luck.

Dustin Henderson's medical condition is called cleidocranial dysplasia and it's a disorder involving the abnormal development of bones in the skull and collar (clavicle) area. The condition is passed down through families (inherited).

The quarry scenes were filmed at the same location as the quarry scenes in The Fundamentals of Caring (2016), which is another Netflix original.

Holly Wheeler's moments on-screen were unscripted. When she slouches at the dinner table and in another scene replies, "Yes!" were ad-libbed.

Of the many nods to Stephen King in this series, in one of the episodes the kids travels a significant stretch along the railroad tracks. Most of the story in Stand by Me movie (or in the The Body novella it is based on), is about some kids travelling along the railroad tracks.

Winona Ryder is admittedly a late bloomer in terms of electronic devices and hereby didn't know what streaming was, when she was approached for this Netflix series.

The series's logo resembles the font used on the covers for the original 1980s editions of Stephen King novels, notably Cujo and Christine.

The character of State Trooper O'Bannon is a reference to Dan O'Bannon. The screenwriter of Alien (1979) and Dark Star (1974).

Every episode has a movie poster from a horror/sci-if/paranormal cult classic. The motif is expressly pointed out in Episode 5 when Lonnie tells Jonathan to take down the Evil Dead poster in his room.

The quarry scene in Chapter Two: The Weirdo on Maple Street is the same location used in The Walking Dead Season 1. Most notable episode 4 Vatos.

The character of Holly Wheeler (Mike's baby sister) is played by identical twin sisters.

Winona Ryder and Matthew Modine have appeared together once before, in the music video for Roy Orbison's "A Love is So Beautuful".

Matthew Modine stated in an interview that the character of Dr. Brenner was written as wearing a plaid shirt and jeans. Instead, Modine worked closely with the Duffer brothers to craft the character's look, and patterned his hair after Robert Shaw in "The Battle of the Bulge" and a pristine suit after Cary Grant's wardrobe in "North by Northwest".

The bicycles the boys ride were retro fitted with parts to appear correct for the time in 1983. Small front chainrings and geometry for those bikes weren't around for at least another 10 years.

Winona Ryder (Joyce Byers) was born in 1971. The series takes place mainly in 1983. Ryder turned 12 years old that year. She was roughly the same age in real life as all of the main young child characters were in the year the series takes place.

The older brother to the missing boy is named John Byers. This is also the name of one of the Lone Gunmen from The X-Files.

I read recently that new up and coming writers rather prefer to be involved in TV (series) these days than movies.

Matt also teased that the second season, which the pair confirmed hasn’t been written yet, would ramp up the action slowly. In the first episode, Will is abducted before the show’s opening credits even roll but the Duffers envision a second outing where “Joyce isn’t at an 11 from the beginning.”

One of the things the duo said they’d like to keep consistent, however, is the length of each season. Stranger Things only consisted of eight installments that ran between 45 to 55 minutes and they added the second season would be eight episodes long if it’s green-lit.

Did not even know there was a thread about this series :p

I watched it last weekend, When i started watching it I was also hooked, I needed to know what happens next. I love the way the series was shot, I love the sounds and the way they use it + the music. Its a real "Fun to watch" series. it feels like Super8/IT/Poltergeist coming together.
The rating of 9.2 on IMDB is a little over exaggerated, its really good, but not 9.2 good. 9.2 would mean its the best series ever which it is definitely not. But its a solid 8.8.
There will be a second season and the same actors will be used, i don't really like this idea, I would have liked each season being its own story like "True Detective" rather than making this another "Strain" type series, they told a story and they did it brilliantly, don't mess it up with a squeal series.

The Wire, Band of Brothers, Sherlock also scored higher than that, What i mean is "Stranger things" is not in that league. Its good but not that good.
 
Took a few hours away from work to watch the last few episodes.

Great ensemble cast, good to see Winona on form again - and the kids were fun not annoying.

More please.

I loved how it actually came to a good conclusion instead of ending with all these stupid cliff hangers.

I would love it if instead of rehashing the characters in season two they took aspects of this one and made a new story.

I kinda feel that the average series now days is more focused on job security for the actors and long life than telling a good story.

Hehe. Also wondering why people are overlooking the bathroom scene...it may not be a cliffhanger of Walking Dead's last season proportions but it's still non-closure.

I enjoyed the show very much, btw...it's fun in a simple way. I'm not in the "Winona was awesome" camp totally...she came across a little shrill and annoying at times but hey, that's probably the writing and direction more than her.
