Trying to help my girlfriend find a decent TV Box. Nothing too fancy - no 4k, sound bars, etc. Android household. Had a Roku previously and was happy with that. NetFlix, BritBox and similar. DStV (personally not sure of Multi-Choice's offerings but would want to watch live sport). Looking to spend in the R1,500 ballpark.

I'd looked into the Chrome-Cast earlier this year for someone else and that seemed a safe option (and possibly more future proof than a Chinese type thing I had a few years back - mainly for the precursor to Kodi). Saw a 2022 'cheaper' Chrome-Cast on YouTube over the weekend. Same shape as the 4k model launched in 2020 - just cheaper. But didn't find the 2022 model in SA online shops...

Your thoughts and opinions on what's available in the mid-market please?

Get it before the special ends!
This is the best prices I have seen on this, I second this also av1 support

Thanks guys. And these will all natively run the full range of DsTV products too?
They will for now but there's a suspicion that DStv will eventually be only available on their streama.

Would Netflix use av1 to stream to this box?
Netflix stream a movie title to any box .

If that box supports AV1 - it decodes AV1
If not, then it just falls back onto the 'old' codec

You'll never know what it does (or doesn't do) by just using at all, unless you look

I would go with an old laptop, I don't own a TV. I have an old computer but with all this eskom bullsht I don't use it anymore. My laptop does everything and unlike an android box it doesn't get old as fast or is limited to with ram and stuff.

Today only..

I don't trust sticks as well. Unless one is forced to buy one I would never recommend one.

This is the non 4K one ... I have one, and I won't buy it, even at that price. Too many issues with having to reboot it constantly for the remote to work
I have this one and have not had a days problem since the beginning of the year.. I for one don't need 4k lol

ChromeCast is awesome. I think the one you are looking for is the ChromeCast with Google TV.

This one has the full interface with Google TV, the older one you cast from apps on your phone.

MiBox is also good, I prefer the Google TV experience though.
