Hi Guys.

I've decided to get into the Linux game alongside windows, and figured Ubuntu would probably be the easiest for me to start using.

The main issue for me right now ... is I just can't get the stupid bloody thing to work!!!

I made one CD, which everytime I try install it, fails at some point during the purple installation screen and gives me a whole bunch of text in the console saying failed and I can't type anything.

Then I made another CD and isntalled that from windows, and it installed, but when I try boot into Ubuntu ... it fails too.

Why is it so hard to install, and is there another version of linux I should be using that is user friendly?

By the way, this is on a desktop.

Regards

Itai

Hey eitai (hawk from AndroidZA here! :) )

A few things - did you burn the disk image at the slowest speed possible? That helps quite a bit in preventing corruption etc.

Did you try install it through Wubi (You mention: "installed that from windows".)

Ubuntu is about as user friendly as it gets.

Could you perhaps be more specific with what happens when it goes wrong? Perhaps post the error message :p

Howzit man :)

Firstly ... u coming to the google function in May ... did you register? Link on my site in case you missed it.

Second ... I have no idea what Wubi is :p ... I'll try boot into it again tomorrow and will write down the message.
This time round it's only a 1 liner error message :p

Awesome stuff, good luck! I'm sure the gents who know more about Linux than I do should be around in this thread shortly.

I have also had issues installing Ubuntu alongside my Windows 7 Pro, but somehow managed to get it right. Personally I think a dual-boot machine is brilliant, especially if you work in the IT industry or something closely related. And you being the Android buff you are, I am surprised you have not done this ages ago!

My suggestion is to google dual-booting and how to set it up. I quickly did, but can't find anything immediately. The big trouble with Dual-boot is the partitioning. That is where my troubles were in the Win7-Ubuntu setup. If anybody knows the right way to do it, possibly with a guide, please post the link here. I am also due for a reload, and I so am doing a dual-boot system again this time around. Will do a little research now myself.

Okay, this one seems to be a good guide. At least for my needs.
http://lifehacker.com/#!5403100/dual+boot-windows-7-and-ubuntu-in-perfect-harmony

How I am going to approach it is first back up all my data, format my entire 1tb drive, then partition it in 3 partitions, the first 2 being my OS's and the third my data. Then I install Windows 7, and when that is done I start Ubuntu up in Live mode and then install it on the second partition. Seems simple enough. Think I should start backing up so long.

I skimmed through this thread, so may have missed it, but what are the chances that you're ISO/CD is corrupt?

Never had an issue with this myself (Win 7 installed first, then Ubuntu)

Clearly a case of the user being the problem.

Seriously would not doubt that if you asked the question. The question was posted by someone with a higher post count than you, and a bit more street cred here and a few other places. Not discounting whatever experience you might have, but when it comes to computers the most impossible problems tend to show up at the least likely of times, even when you have RTFMed and done everything by the book. That is when you turn to forums and ask for help. This was done here, and instead of pointing fingers, try to be a little more helpful. If it was that easy, give answers, don't point fingers. That way solutions are reached.

eitai2001, if that is the case, the error message will be needed, so when you install it, take a picture of it and come post the error here. Pretty sure we could get down to the issue and have it solved in no time.

etai try this (can also be used if you're a bit afraid of the dual booting thing. data loss xan happen). Download an app called Virtualbox. If you have the iso of ubuntu, load it into virtualbox and install from there. If the same issue persists, its the image. Going to install ubuntu alongside windows later, will see if i can post screenshots to help for those who want dual boot systems.

Hi eitai,

You shouldn't have issues with installing Ubuntu either to a clean HDD or to a 2nd partition alongside Windows. Can you give us a few more details, such as which ISO you're using? The simplest one to try would be the 10.10 32-bit version. Whilst it should be 100% fine to install it straight "off-the-bat", you could try starting up the LiveCD, which will allow you to see whether the desktop starts up (with no installation needed) and whether you can access the internet. Feel free to drop a PM if you need a new CD sent to you.

Feel free to ignore the troll too

Itai, give this suggestion a try - it means you don't have to decide which OS to boot into. You open Ubuntu as a VM in Windows (ie as an application), both desktops integrate pretty much seamlessly and you can work with either OS directly

I'd agree with trying it as a test to see if the ISO works. But if eitai's interested in having a proper Ubuntu experience, why run it on top of Windows? That would be like hamstringing an athlete by making them sprint on thick sand

I also think it could be a corrupt download issue.

Another thing to check is the MD5 of the ISO you downloaded. If the one you downloaded doesn't match the one on the server then it didn't download correctly. http://portableapps.com/apps/utilities/winmd5sum_portable

To check if the actual disk burning went okay, you can choose the option "check disk for defects" which should appear on first menu.

Or download the Alternate ISO. Sometimes the livecd can be problematic.

I prefer the Alternate CD too, even though it's less pretty than the Live CD. That said, the 10.10 ISO should work fine.
