Students die from cough syrup 'drinks'

lol I remember this. I wonder if those kids now have the same attitude with their current employers. As in... "We need to decolonise the employee rulebook in line with traditional African HR practices. No meetings without meat and salt!". Or something.
loool no, they gonna lose the vrrphaaa.

eiisshh! eisan.
When I was in school before the rinderpest, we were shown the 'drugs are bad' films.

The only thing I ever took away from them was the segment of a teenage girl who mixed two drugs and ended up in a permanent vegetative state.

Scared the crap out of me at the time, still does

The original "lean" wasn't with alcohol though as far as I can recall.
It was codeine+promethazine cough syrup, plus soda, plus some sweets/candy to make it taste better.

It's pretty hard to die from normal "lean" unless you don't measure the cough syrup to make sure you don't go over 5g of paracetemol.

I wonder what dumbass decided to add alcohol.
Same dumbasses who drink like ten Jaggaboms at the party.

It was much too over the top for me to take it seriously. I wanted to know what was taken and how much. But then even as a teenager I'd read the entire insert that came with medicines.

The active ingredient in the cough mixture they were looking for is Codeine.... Opium. Combining it with alcohol is doubling up on "downers", they both suppress the nervous system. There wouldn't be hallucinations, probably a bit of sleepy/dreamy state, followed by loss of consciousness and finally respiratory failure.
Only if you take too much. Codeine isn't opium though, it is merely one of the chemicals in opium and way weaker than morphine. Although I've never understood the desire to consume depressants to the point of near or total unconsciousness at the very least anyone with any sense would experiment with lower doses to figure out how much to take. You can certainly combine these things without killing yourself. The products even conveniently tell you exactly how much there is of each drug contained therein.

I grew up very sheltered it seems.
Good old states ( freestate)
.. drinking was the only thing we might have tried.
Never understood why people would want to do something like this.
Way to much of a control freak even taking conserta makes me question why the hell they would give kids drugs.

i have a bottle apparently varsity kids pay top dollar for my prescription
I’m very scared to get dependent on something.

Even as a teenager, I never had the urge to try out all these things. I always wondered what compels someone to be a slave to a substance. I not judging. Just wondering.

The cost of alcohol probably contributes. You can take a couple of pills and party the night away with the added bonus of no hangover.

As an aside, excess booze can lead to aggression whereas that doesn't happen with drugs.

Talking softer recreational club style, not GBH or hectic drugs, that stuff's obviously dangerous.

Then you should report that pharmacy.

Anything containing codeine can only be bought over the counter.

When I buy Myprodol ffs, they look up my details on the system and only then sell it to me.

No one will sell anyone 8 bottles of cough syrup that contain codeine...let alone a school boy.

I have to drink two codeine pills per day, and just to get my medication for a month is a mission. They can’t even do a repeat on my prescription so I have to get a new script every month from the doctor.

And it takes a long time for them to dispence it as they phone the doctor every time to make sure I need the script.

The one pharmacist dropped a tablet the one day. She stopped counting the pills, got the head pharmacist and they removed the dropped tab and disposed of it.

So even just getting codeine is a huge pain even if you have a script. Hope the medical bafoons does something now, but will most likely make it a huge mission for the people needing the meds to get it.

So I would say it is good that those two got their Darwin awards. You do not screw with meds!

You're going to the pharmacy in the leafy suburbs probably. Around these parts you can buy pretty much anything as long as you have the cash. Only thing that they refuse to sell you is Rohypnol and Morphine. Everything else goes.

It is easier to get morphine than codeine. Even with a script at Dischem it is a pain in the arse to get codeine.
Morphine with a script is no mission at all. Even at state hospitals they will give out Morphine like sweets, but have never seen them give out codeine at all.

Long term codiene use isn't good boet. It weakens your immune system.

You're better off switching to something like tramazac or such.

That's also stupid, but not the same. Benadryl is for allergies and its active ingredient is Diphenhydramine.
