Serious question here regarding the unequal length headers - maybe I'm just missing something obvious.

Your first assumption is wrong. The firing order on the boxer engines go left-left then right-right, with harmonics and all sort of magic happening in the exhaust the end result are pulses at about half the engine frequency. Making the 4-cylinder engine sound like a 2-cylinder engine. Hence the rumble.

The rumble dies down the higher up in revs you go until at red-line it's just a roar (well, on my car that is)
Also on the turbocharged engines the turbo will flatten out the half-speed pulses, with the effect getting larger the higher the revs.

My belief was that the rumble was because of the boxer layout. I am questioning the people who say it's the headers.

The layout of the engine had an impact on the design of the headers, but it's the firing-order of the cyclinders that gives the rumble. The unequal length of the headers accentuates this.
The subaru headers are a dual 2-1 design. Meaning the two cylinders on each side go into one pipe very close to the cyclinder heads then the 2 pipes on either side of the engine join up a bit behind the engine. But the exhaust runs off to left-hand side of the engine (where the turbo sits) so one set of pipes is longer than the other.

Short version: It's the fact that 2 cylinders that fire right after each other go into the same pipe before going into the exhaust/collector/up-pipe to turbo.

Nope, automation software and commissioning, but I'm on my second Subaru now and I've upgraded both of them. First thing to change on both was the exhaust. There is no such thing as 'too much rumble'.

First was a RS wagon, current is a STI. And yes, the wing is huge and it has gold wheels, and it goes thru petrol like there's a hole in the tank.
I don't care, I just love driving it that much.

I see the price of the new WRX has been announced....near as makes no difference to 500k...yikes!!!

Ok....? So do you automatically round up to the next 100 from 401 or from 449...

R 449 000 is not "almost" 500.

The car is fully specced and full of refinements that make most of the opposition pale into the background, so you won't be adding to that figure at all - that is 449 on the road.

@ Bunta - wait until you drive it... :p

I'm curious though, why do they say starting at R449,000 then? Things like smash and grab etc.?

The manual is R 449 000 and the auto is R 469 000.

Both are OTR prices, and there are literally no extras apart from Smash & Grab.

The STi is not available at this stage - launch should be July/August, in time for my retirement! ;)

I'd rather spend R449,000 on a WRX than the same amount on the donkey that is a 320i...

True, but for a mere R50,000 more you're into Golf 7R territory. Would you still go for the Scooby? Perhaps, perhaps not.

Because the STI is also a WRX, albeit a more expensive one? :p

Heh thought that, but they have the WRX STI starting at R599,000

Ah alright, thanks for clearing that up. Includes all on the road fees, carbon emissions tax etc.? If so I must say it's a nice break from the stupidly extensive (and expensive) options list that's so prevalent today.

Of course, which idiot spends 500k on a Golf? :p It may be fast and have 4WD, but it's still a Golf. And no Golf will ever sound half as good as a Scooby...
