This is a weird one for me. Had slight pain on the right side of my right foot yesterday evening, now this morning it's so bad I can barely walk?! If I walk on the left side ( where most of the big bones , ball etc ) and most of the weight, it's fine. I don't recall banging it or anything but if I put any weight on the right side, it's excrutiating. No bruises or swelling that I can see either.

Has this happened to anyone? I'm thinking it may be a muscle or something so am trying foot spa's and deep heat etc but if it's not gone today then I'll have to go into a trauma room to have a look :(

Probably will be a nerve problem called neuroma, if I remember right an X-ray/Cat Scan will show it.

You'll need to get it properly diagnosed; only then will you know how to treat it. I'm crippled every so often - once or twice a year - by either gout or tendinitis. A bad case of either will have you contemplating a back-yard amputation.

A friend who's a nurse just BBM'd saying it could quite easily be gout. Sent the other for anti-inflam and pain meds. If its not less by tommorrow will have to see doc/trauma.

Not funny about backyard, it's damn painful! :p

I'm going to go with HapticSimian and your friend, the nurse, here. No bumps or knocks... Excruciating pain... Sounds just like gout to me.

You'll need to get rid of a uric acid build-up... Drink lots of water, send someone to the store for cherries (no kidding) and take a couple of pain killers to take the edge off.

PS. Excellent reason to get on the couch and watch some sport this afternoon while everyone else run around for you. ;)

I hope not for his sake. My sister had this op about 2 or 3 months ago on her foot and is still recovering from it. It can take up to 6 months for some people for all the pain to go away. Some end up with permanent nerve pain after the op apparently.

Ye my mom had it and took her about the same time to recover after the OP while wearing a moon-boot

lol why is the first response always cancer diagnosis. Secondly tell a person to go for a ct/xray is invalid, without a referal they will chase you.

Seems like gout, how old are you? could also be you pulled a muscle in the foot. What I would say if you not allergic to NSAIDs, is pop into your pharmacy and ask for a few caps of indomethicin. Then see what happens, if it goes away doesnt come back then its nothing to worry about, if it comes back again then go to a GP.

saying "i got a pain in my foot" is a bit vague. I would say gout attack as stated above or just simple muscular damage

are you diabetic btw ?

Neuroma is the inflammation of a nerve not cancer not sure where you sucked that conclusion from, google first before making things up.

I've seen a couple of friends first think it was gout/muscle damage after seeing medical specialists but turned out to be a Neuroma

Well, taken a Ibuprofen tab, seemed to help but wore off quick ( 4 hours ). As to age, 33.

Not diabetic no but from what I read about gout it's uric acid related? Had a uric kidneystone a couple years ago so, yeah, seems to be tending towards that.

lol @ "I got a pain in my foot" as vague, thats exactly it, I have no idea whats wrong and since I haven't whacked it, got bruises, swelling or redness, it's a puzzle for me.

Neuroma is a tumour formation on nervous tissue. Hence its name

Eg. Lymphoma, neuroma and so on

I know that, but must say what type of pain, is it sharp and pin point or generalised

Provide a brief medical history and life style. Age, gender smoking drinking ... More information easier to help.

Like a lot of the time I have patients comming to me and saying they have a headache. After asking questions I find the headache isn't due to stress but they went to gym 2 days before, and the muscle strain neck n shoulders is the cause of the headache, so an anti-inflammatory is required. Medicine is investigative work the less known the harder it is

Hmmm. Pain is a dull ache but as soon as I put pressure on the side it becames very sharp. Difficult to walk on it. Male, 33 , obese, not diabetic but on meds for both hypertension and insulin ressistance. Sedentry lifestyle ( developer so sit all day long ), generally healthy eater - low fat foods and low gi diet.

Well, judging from what I have read thus far, it seems to be leaning towards an acute gout attack. The fact that you used ibuprofen and it seemed to ease the pain for a while is indicative of some sort of imflammation. Also the fact that its when pressure is applied the pain tends to get worse, meaning its deep within the tissue also supportive of gout attacks.

What is alarming though is the fact that you sit all day, 33 and already being treated for hypertension. This could have vascular implications which will result in a dull pain however this seems extremely unlikely since there is no swelling in the region, again supportive of an accute gout attack.

Your previous history with the kidney situation also is supportive of gout.

However, if you are being treated for insulin resistance (i assume metformin), this with hypertension medication can cause peripheral neuropathy (basically results in pain usually apparent in the lower limbs - dont google it for your own good). Are you on cardioprotective asprin atm? (usually a daily dose of 50mg), and is the drug therapy fairly new when did you start ? I would assume its fairly recent since you 33.

Now If you want you can pm me your medication you using and I will check for you if an adverse reaction is a possibility and needs to brought to your doctors attention. HOWEVER I would say its NOT LIKELY, though a possibility that must not be left unchecked. If you want me to check your drug usuage please do it via a PM otherwise you going to get 400 links to side-effects that arent relevant and how your doctor is stupid, then you will panic yourself to death, trust me. Use the drug name not the brand name would make my life much easier as there are so many brands its difficult to keep up with it off hand and that most hypertension medications today are combined drug dosing for convenience. Also send the frequency your take them and the dose.

Since you posting here I would also assume this is the first time this has happened to you, so I suggest that you go to your pharmacy and buy a drug called Indomethicin, the 25mg capsule. Since you have taken ibuprofen you need not worry about allergies towards it. If the pain persists you take 25mg to 50mg indomethicin, as its the drug of choice for accute gout attacks (its also not too expensive, couple of bucks you only need a few). You can take it three times a day and it does not require a doctor's prescription though take it with food (you dont have gastric ulcers by any chance?). Also what concerns me is the fact that it started in the night as a slight pain, what this means is that its possible that you pulled a tendon inside your foot while in a deep sleep that was already strained causing a light pain to a heavy pain, indomethicin will help you in this regard as well. Do not take ibuprofen and indomethicin together, you can however boost either drug with paracetamol ( up to a 1000mg) and if you still need to boost further then you can take both tablets (paracetamol + indomethicin) with coffee instead of water (black coffee no milk and sugar and not a mad scientist amount of coffee just an average cup). Basically you making your own myprodol like this, I find its better to do this than buy the combinations (which is why clicks hate me because I dont push their OTC sales LOL bloody greedy schits) as it lacks codiene which at that dose is useless and will only cause a slight constipation.

My verdict still leans strongly on accute gout. Though there is no need to rush to the doctor unless it persists for more than a few days so say tuesday/wednesday if you still in pain you should go (or if its unbarable then go ASAP so you can gain access to stronger painkillers). Also in the future keep a record of the area and if the pain comes again, then you most likely will require chronic prophylaxis if it is gout, if not just keep some indomethicin capsules handy at home for when the need arises and inform your GP on your next visit. Just keep an eye on the foot, should your skin discolour or you lose sensation of touch seek immediate medical attention.

Lol its kind of hard when you dont have the patient in front of you :(

oh if you do not wish to buy the indomethicin you can stay with ibuprofen but use 400mg of it, it just wont work as well

hope this helps :) and remember its free to talk to a pharmacist dont be shy going to yours :p

Many thanks for the advice Riax. This morning the pain is a lot less and can walk around again although with a slight hobble. Also when I said it started at night, it was still early evening like 6pm, a couple hours before sleep where I could inadvetently done some damage.

The hypertension is not a very severe case, the medication I take is more a preventative and maintain levels ( Beta blocker 5mg daily ). It's related more to stress and high adrenal levels. Young yes but my doc said let's rather prevent damage than allow it to ouccor.

I'll mention to my doc next checkup. Another reason why this was so weird is I'm generally pretty healthy, avoid flu, see a doc once a year at best, eat low gi food and home cooked meals, avoid oily food etc. Been tackling regular exercise but with my son rocking up 3 months early, it threw my regimine out the window and I need to get back into it.

You can hire wheelchairs and zimmer frames from some pharmacies.
