suicide

I guess it's selfish on both sides then?

I'm not depressed - but here's a genuine question those that may be : with meds, councelling, support and help - is it not less selfish than leaving your family greaving for years ?

In this day and age there is no excuse for depression that leads to suicide. There is enough medical help and medication available to counter the medical causes of depression.

Depression is not purely a medical issue. Those who believe that depression can be solved with a few pills are deluding themselves...

*ignoring cringe-worthy typos*

By definition, suicide is a selfish act. However being selfish is most certainly the least of anyone's concerns once they hit that point. It's very circumstantial and very much a matter of perspective: whilst from your perspective it might be selfish, they might believe everyone else will be better off without them. While this might not be true, they have convinced themselves of this. Perspective and empathy - two things many judgemental people in this thread lack imo...

And what if the meds, counselling, support, help blah blah blah just dont work?

I've seen families, friends and lovers all affected by depression. The hurt and disappointment has left a mark on them that will last as long as the grief would, though in some cases I think the grief would be easier (and less destructive) to deal with.

The lack of rational thinking often leads to some pretty horrible choices that can have a ripple effect.

When is it more selfish to stay than to go?

Yea. Ok.

Argue with someone else ... I'm not good enough for you debaters ;)

Then it is time to radically change your situation and remove yourself from the factors that are causing the depression. Move to the coast and become a beach bum.

How does one time-travel, or at least completely erase an incident from memory?

A: you assume the person in question has the motivation and means to do something as drastic as that

and

B: if moving changed could cure depression dont you think somebody might have said something by now?

sounds like you people want the suicides to go ahead and do it. I don't buy that. There is always another option. Maybe it has a lot to do with education, emotional stability, upbringing, and spiritual values... but I was raised in an environment where I was taught how to ask for help and how to give help. I pity those who did not receive the same benefit. I do still however believe that the act of suicide is the ultimate act of selfishness and cruel retribution.
