What a performance by Parnell, certainly puts him ahead of Olivier for the test match I think.

Also, does anyone have a grasp on how the points system works for this competition?

Well done Cape Cobras, Parnell opened the batting and scored a fast 100. Lions did well to bat 164 overs it was just not enough.

With a performance like that, one can argue he is after JP's position in the team. From a balance perspective that would be my option as a 4th seamer is handy. Especially a left-armer as well. JP is also not offering anything more from a batting perspective than Parnell as well. Still believe that if you have payed 40+ tests and only average 33, you cannot be regarded as a top 6 test batsmen.

I am not convinced that we should go all out seam attack for the 3rd test. Personally, I would go this route:

Cook, Elgar, Amla, du Plessis, Bavuma, Parnell, de Kock, Philander, Maharaj, Olivier, Rabada

For an outright win: 10 points.
If the match is tied: 6 points each.
If the match is abandoned: 5 points each (see: Knights vs Titans).

Batting and bowling points are only awarded in the first 100 overs of each first innings (which is why the Dolphins vs Warriors game was only drawn after the Dolphins had had the opportunity to receive 100 overs), and are awarded as follows:
  • Batting: 1 point for attaining 150 runs, and 0.02 points for every run scored thereafter.
  • Bowling: Maximum of 4 points to be awarded, one each at the fall of the 3rd, 5th, 7th and 9th wicket.

If play starts with less than 10 hours remaining, a one innings match will be played. No batting and bowling points will be awarded, and the team winning on the one innings will score 6 points.

This. We've got Maharaj making good strides so JPs role as spinner even less important.

They can even go so far as to replace Abbott with an extra batting alrounder, if Parnell comes in for Duminy.
