My Corsa LDV is overheating. Is there a way to check if it is the thermostat without removing it?

If the thermostat is faulty the radiator will stay cold, whilst the engine would be at a higher than normal temperature.
Those are the symptoms but the only real way to check it is by removing it and seeing what temperature it opens at (or just making sure that it opens, ) by putting it in a kettle or pot.

However thermostats are very reliable and don't pack up very often.

Not for the Corsa unfortunately, if it is overheating, it is most likely the thermostat. It could be the waterpump or the fan but the thermostat us a known culprit on those engines.

I don't know what they did with the bakkie engine but those engines runs hot, add to that the exhaust manifold that is very close to the radiator, when the engine heats up everything heats up as well, so your test might not actually work.
