A new Suzuki crossover hits SA in ‘23.

Suzuki Fronx is a Baleno-based crossover

The Suzuki Fronx is one of two important reveals this week at the Auto Expo taking place in India. Here’s all you need to know about this new model that’s likely to come to SA.

Based on the Suzuki Baleno/Toyota Starlet, the Suzuki Fronx is said to be an ‘SUV with coupe style’, but we reckon its closer to being a hatchback on stilts. Visually, it looks fresh and modern, taking quite a few of the current fashionable design elements like the LED bar at the rear and narrow daytime running lights/headlights. There’s also a similarity at the front to the confirmed-for-SA Suzuki Grand Vitara.

At 3 995 mm long and with a wheelbase of 2 520 mm, the Suzuki Fronx is almost identical in size to the Suzuki Baleno. There’s no mention of ground clearance, but given its positioning, it’s fair to assume that it will be higher than the Baleno’s 150 mm.

Under the bonnet, there will be two engines offered in the Suzuki Fronx. First up is a turbocharged 1.0-litre mild hybrid Boosterjet which develops 75 kW and 147.6 Nm. Customers will have the option of either a 5-speed manual or 6-speed torque converter auto with paddle shifters.

Suzuki Fronx for SA?

The Suzuki Fronx will be going on sale in India in April, and we expect Suzuki South Africa to bring it in during the course of 2023.

Suzuki Fronx revealed as Baleno-based crossover that could also spawn a Toyota

The Suzuki Fronx broke cover at the Auto Expo in New Delhi on Thursday, and it’s looking set to come to South Africa.

But is there really a gap for yet another compact Suzuki SUV? You might not think so, given how the new crossover is similar in size to the Brezza, but it appears that Maruti Suzuki is positioning it as a more car-like alternative with ‘coupe-inspired’ styling.

Beneath the skin, the Suzuki Fronx is decidedly similar to the Baleno hatchback, and it even shares the latter’s overall length and wheelbase, and it has a similar cabin, although the exterior body panels are unique.

There are also rumours of a Toyota version that could be called the Taisor, and this could form part of the Japanese carmaker’s strategy to replace the Urban Cruiser in South Africa, given that production of the latter has ended in India.

In India the Suzuki Fronx will be offered with a choice of two engines: a normally aspirated 1.2-litre that produces 66kW and 113Nm, and a 1.0-litre turbo motor that offers 74kW and 148Nm. Both are paired with a five-speed manual gearbox as standard, but the 1.2 is available with a five-speed automatic transmission and the 1.0T can be ordered with a six-speed auto.

New Suzuki Fronx heading to SA: here’s what we know so far

It looked a bit like a sad wallflower in a boisterous Bollywood movie standing next to the five-door Suzuki Jimny at the Auto Expo 2023 in New Delhi, India.

While journalists and VIPs fawned over its stablemate the new Suzuki Fronx, a Baleno based compact SUV which is also heading to South Africa, is actually quite stylish and is the brand’s first new model range designed using their new Crafted Futurism design language.

You have to wonder though how much market research went into the name being tagged to it as a permanent fixture.

Based on the HEARTECT platform that also underpins the Baleno and Swift, the Suzuki Fronx will have similar levels of performance and safety features.

A large front grille framed by LED headlights and fog lights, a coupe-like sloping roofline and LED tail lights connected with an LED lightbar coupled with sizeable wheels, roofbars and silver skid plates give it a decidedly urban appeal. Almost a smaller version of the Grand Vitara.

In fact, in South Africa the Fronx will fit in below the new Grand Vitara, which will also now have a hybrid option.

It looks equally good inside, with gloss metal highlights and a nine-inch high definition touch screen that Suzuki says offers 40 connected vehicle functions.

I couldn't live with myself if I bought a car called a FRONX. Suzuki names are really odd. Baleno, Brezza, Celerio, now FRONX?!

Next up, Suzuki Farter
