The problem appears to be that for a lot of people the mere presence of a black person leads them to conclude that a place is not safe!!

This is true, but is unavoidable. Generalising:

If I am walking with my family, I will be tense if I passed a gang of black street youths – they may all be members of the church choir and be talking about their next good deed. Yet, if I passed a gang of white street youths - they may all have prison convictions and be talking about their next robbery, I would feel less tense. Just the way things are in SA.

It’s true that this is the way I am. I would venture that it is the way most vulnerable people in SA feel, given SA precedent. It’s simple statistics that most violence is perpetuated by blacks. You obviously know different.

Well that much is obvious given that they make up the overwhelming majority of the population. But to stereotype that way I think is a bit unfair.

I know this does not help my argument, but I'd unfortunately have to add that it may not just be Palimino that feels that way. I live in a flat and have often noted that when a group of black men are gathered on the one side of the road, chatting or whatever, almost every black person that walks up the road after that will cross the road and pass on the other side. Unfortunately this is not a perception that has been created by the white man so "we" cannot be blamed for this. So why do black people stereotype their fellow black man?

The majority argument does not work as if 1% of each population group was a violent criminal then a group of 5 white guys standing on the side of the road has just as much chance of being criminals as 5 black guys doing the same thing!
So if we had an equal spread of criminals in each race group
