SWC in SA a "BIG MISTAKE"!

You have the audacity to state that I am making a fool of myself and yet you appear to be proving it may be you with this post. You were the one that stated Melville is unsafe based purely on your own experience. A single mugging that you are aware of and Melville is too dangerous yet London and NY are not expected to be 100% safe! You implied a 100% crime free record was required when you wrote off the examples we gave!

i'm aware of many incidents in Melville, the place is really dangerous. So is Sandton, and most other places. Try Alexandra ?

You have very little logic in your responses, have you bought some of that good stuff from Durban ? Rather give it to the dog.

I asked many of poor BLACK people already ............
they also felt safe pre 1994....
but not post 1994.

Explain please ;)
I wouldn't be surprised if they misunderstood what you were asking, going by your style of writing and incoherency.

That's right slide further and further into insult mode. It's what people tend to do when they run out of sensible arguments!

So you are aware that Melville is REALLY dangerous but you happily let you son go their with his GF? This story gets more and more intriguing!!!

Lol, you were aware that it was dangerous but didn't bother to caution him against going there. Or did it only become dangerous after he was mugged?

Well, it's rather difficult to respond to someone who is beyond reason, and beyond sense ! You have to explain it somehow !

I have never been happy about him going there, he got there himself. As for the GF, he met her there, I had nothing to do with her presence in Melville.

So you agree that Melville is a really dangerous place ? As I believe ?

I always cautioned him against going there. It's been dangerous in Melville for many years. Go for a stroll between old Melville and new Melville on Friday night at 01:00 and see. Write your will before you go.

Also walk around outside Sandton City late at night, and have a stroll through Alexandra.

Unfortunately you won't be around to tell us how safe South Africa is.

Maybe that can be an attraction for foreign tourists during the WC : Witness real live AK-47 gunfights : Witness real ATM bombings ! Maybe even participate in the gunfights - we supply bulletproof vests - just make sure that they don't shoot you in the head !

The problem appears to be that for a lot of people the mere presence of a black person leads them to conclude that a place is not safe!!

Bullets, sledge-hammers and knives speak louder than skin-colour !

Look, let's just agree to disagree, this is going nowhere.

But my point of view is that although SA is fine on a day-to-day basis, there is a very dangerous criminal undertone that pops out from time to time, and if you are in the way you are dead or injured. And you have to take care and avoid dangerous areas, and be circumspect in your behaviour, for example don't stop next to the road to take pictures, especially in isolated areas.

And don't roam around Melville or visit a shebeen in Alexandra because it sounds like fun. You may recall the young woman who was murdered in broad daylight in Alexandra just a few months ago. She was white, it probably happens to black people every day, but is not reported in the headlines.

And all of this also applies to WC tourists. If they are in a tour group with a tour leader they will be fine. It's more the couples who hire a car and roam the country that will be at risk, especially if they get adventurous in the entertainment that they seek - sure you can have a jol on the Cape Flats, but you can also end up dead.

All of the above are reported in the papers on a daily basis, and we often come across these situations in person. I can't believe how anybody could possibly be in such denial as to not see the wood for the trees - I find it absolutely flabbergasting when the evidence is right before your very eyes.

The one thing that I find really scary about South Africa, is that it is one country where a flat tyre or car breakdown, especially at night, can easily and quickly lead to your death - there have been a number of instances of this in and around Johannesburg.

And LancelotSA is going to prove me wrong by taking a stroll through the Wilds in Joburg at midnight this coming Saturday ? Not ?

There will always be a difference between a high crime rate and being at risk.

In any part of CT you are at some level of risk but this varies drastically.

If you into townships and the Cape Flats, then that puts you at risk, since these areas account for, 75% + of all crimes in Metropolitan region.

Outside of these areas e.g. walking around the V&A, new stadium...even parts of Woodstock, its on par with most cities if not lower for what one would classify at a "City Centre".

This remains a key reason for the existence of a tourism industry in Cape Town at all. Its because German, UK and many other tourists were able e.g. to walk from CT stadium to the V&A to their hotel , with a low risk or probability of experiencing crime. This, without any WC level of security and throughout the tourism peak season. Of course, there will be incidents and many, as a result of the high inequalities and weak general security in our cities.

Areas like Nyanga, Philippi are simply no go areas, unfortunately its the poor that suffer the most. Yes, "posh" areas do suffer, but one could hardly compare 17 murders in the CBD in one year compared to around 2,000 in Nyanga alone.

and yet you see nothing wrong with having a football tournament down the road from what could be described as a warzone. That's 5 murders a day alone in Nyanga. Worse than many areas of Iraq or Afghanistan

Hardly relevant to tourists, capetownguy's post, & this thread.

How many victims of murder have you known? How do you know that it is any better in Iraq / Afghanistan? Sure you're rooting for one side but there are victims on both sides of the fence.

same same :D

So it seems that in future FIFA needs to insist that the world cup can only be held in a country which has a zero crime rate..... oh well it seems this may well be the very last world cup then!

The US is a definite no go zone as they have a history of 2992 people getting killed in one day in one of their major cities! And a lot of those killed were foreigners!

exactly......... in South Africa, the crime level and the places we visited don't make us feel safe. Why we feel safe pre 1994 but not post 1994? Think about that.
You're white.

Maybe they were lucky. You know like white people today who have not yet been murdered and hijacked. My black friends were afraid to go outside at night, were regularly mugged on the trains. This is of course back in the good old days when South Africa was safe.

Actually, I lived in Brazil for 3 months last year. They were telling me horror stories about the crime in their country every single day.

And yes, they also doubted hosting the World Cup in their country.
And they currently actively campaign to discourage tourism, and would even more so if the World Cup were to be held there?

Fix the crime problem and the Neil Watsons of today will disappear.
I doubt that.

You're white.
I am GREEN :)

Don't lie (or may be it is true but I think it is very seldom to happen) , I knew people in Soweto and Alexs, they told me they were very safe when old days ......
but why they voted for anc, the answer is very simple ......... "we have to vote for anc" ........ :D
why? ............... "because they are BLACK." :D

PS: (It is TRUE)
