Switch 2 thread

New firmware dropped.

*Expect a milliion videos of people looking at "performance increases"

Hopefully, they'll fix the bugs in some games that are still crashing in back compatibility mode.

Loads of games work when in Airplane mode but either crash or refuse to run while connected.

Anyone picking up DK Bananza?

I think my dislike of the 2D DK controls has kept me on the fence for this one. See the review embargo lifts tomorrow.

Loved Odyssey as well. I'm sure there is more to this game but just seems to be digging and....more digging.

You know with Mario you're going to get tight controls and well designed levels with variety.

I'd feel more comfortable handing over my cash after I've seen a review from someone I trust

I'm ok with with digital so at least that price is better.

Physical collectors are going to get seriously butt hurt with the Switch 2

If it doesn't need internet, I would prefer a card, that way I know I have it and no I will not destroy the card when they shut the store, don't care what a EULA says.

So, finally got to play the S2 in docked mode:
- Ethernet port not working. Have not tested again with the FW update today, but I doubt it was fixed. Maybe there was a Dock update? Told owner about the known issue. Looks like they're happy with WiFi play.
- USB ethernet dongle works flawlessly. Notably less stutters and smoother gameplay.
- WiFi is way more stable than on S1. Occasional stutters still, but way less than on S1.
- Only played Fortnite. Now that is a generational leap over the S1 in all categories. But surpassing S1 FN is a really low bar...
- No need for headphones is so liberating. This is a game changer for me.
- Machine runs hotter (but all within normal range) when playing FN. Still cool to the touch, and the internal fans way more active than Mario Kart World (in handheld mode). I am not playing FN in handheld mode for a like-for-like comparison.
- Dock fan completely silent during gameplay.
- Did not fiddle with TV settings for my 1080p bog-standard dumb TV, but everything looked super-crisp, super-smooth.

It's a pretty impressive little machine in docked mode. Silent, cool, unobtrusive. Packs a serious punch. Pity about the ethernet port not working natively. Hopefully it's something that can be fixed with a FW upgrade. For that price, one wants everything to just work.

Very positive first reviews

Had an entire rant about this typed out:

Then I thought to get AI's opinion:

I have here 2 NAG CDs and magazines as an example:

Did we ever discuss FPS this much as today? I am reading the magazines to see if we did.

Also referring to Crysis. Remember the old saying "But can it run Crysis?".

Are we really at a point now where we say "Chapter 2 is where you go from 51 FPS to 48 FPS and that is not acceptable, I can't play the game".

Just a reminder, I complained about Gamefreak not making leg movement smooth in a classroom of 6 kids.
But that is on a console where BOTW could easily do much better animations.
Was complaining more about GF and their laziness.
Pokemon does not require ADSL DLSS and Canon DSR super resolution extra fancy butter processing.
Maybe I am still stuck on this before we can even speak about FPS:

Look GF, I can also copy and paste

I take umbrage at AI's take that in the "PS2/XB/GC era 30FPS was accepted as the norm." Was that not the golden age (heck even prior generations - except ofc N64 vaseline-smeared-laggy-mess games) of 60FPS...?

A quick, warm-blooded sexy human DuckDuckGO search resulted in this:

TLDR:
  • PS2 could render games at 60fps easily due to optimized architecture.
  • Weak CPUs in newer consoles hinder achieving stable 60fps gameplay.
  • Most console gamers prioritize visuals over frame rate, pushing a 30fps standard.
