Switch 2 thread

I take umbrage at AI's take that in the "PS2/XB/GC era 30FPS was accepted as the norm." Was that not the golden age (heck even prior generations - except ofc N64 vaseline-smeared-laggy-mess games) of 60FPS...?

A quick, warm-blooded sexy human DuckDuckGO search resulted in this:

TLDR:

PS2 and before that, only needed 30fps because of the limitations in display tech.

PAL CRT only had a refresh rate of 25 full frames per second or 50 if you used interlaced
NTSC CRT Screens could do 59.94 interlaced and 29 if it were full frames.

Both 25 and 29 were accepted as good quality as movies used 24 frames, that limitation were due to the limitations of storing both sound and pictures on a single roll of film.

The whole 60 fps only started when LCD/LED became the norm. Some movies/tv still use 24 fps even though we bridged the limitations from old film tech.

Edit: The way phosphor behaved made interlacing less of an issue than trying to use it on an OLED today. So yes they could do 60 but that's cause they only did half the screen half of the time. <-- Not the same as rendering 60 full frames per second.

Let me try to explain my comment a bit differently.

With reviews on all platforms it feels like this...for ref, I do not watch sports.

You walk in Saturday to your friends watching rugkby on 3 different Frikkie DSTV setups.

You ask, who is winning. One friend mummbles, I guess one of the teams.

You ask, Are you guys not watching?

One friend replies, yeah but we are monitoring each others DSTV signal.

Tim over there has a signal of 96% and we are trying to get it closer to Fanny's signal of 98%.

You then ask, but are you guys actually watching?

You then get a short reply before being ignored, we are but we are loooking...Yessss, Tim's signal went to 97%.

I get what you're saying, just pointing out why we are where we at.

Personally, I couldn't care less re 30/60, as long as the game is good.

My poor eyes could barely notice the frame drops in Echoes of Wisdom. When it really dropped even I noticed but it was very quick back to normal.

The hoo-ha that game had over performance was intense. If I made it through EoW unscathed I'm sure I'll do just fine in DK Bananza.

Just wait until Metroid Prime 4 and it's 120 FPS mode. There will be 2 hour long videos analysis every single frame and pixel. I will just be having fun

Bad frame pacing is where I do have a problem. A lot of Switch 1 games had that problem. If its locked at 30 I can play it no issues but when they try to hit 60 and if the frame pacing is off, the game looks like it stutters <-- Here, I do suffer.

Some games like Bayonetta 2 could not even hit a solid 30, Switch 2 its locked, making for a playable game now.

Same same, I do not have an issue with our discussions and comments by all here.

Just getting annoyed by the reviewers and their 2 rectangle boxes on FPS.

Take a PS5 pro game as an example. So we are going to review a game and point out slow FPS.
That is nice and all, so how can the PS5 Pro gamer get his extra 3 to 5 frames?
Install GPU 2.0 in his console?

Yes, reviewers can mention the parts that do get frame drops and stuff but what use is it on a console.

Back in the day it was simple. "I got a PS2 and it can play all 2 PS2 games" vs "I got a PC cause I can upgrade it and do more stuff".
Of course the PC will outperform it. Hence why most of my younger gaming days was on PC.

Fook it, I got in to mobile gaming thanks to Pokemon and its way of playing the game anywhere.
Not for the jraphics and the performance of the console.
Did not analyze each frame by its designation.

Coming back to the Switch 2, sitting at my desk at work. When lunch time hits I can play a game (Today - Octopath Traveler) which is why I got the thing.

I am not going to install MSI afterburner on the Switch just so I can see my FPS while I am playing.
I will monitor my health, BP and SP in game.

Exactly.

Rather review the game and explain if it is worth while.

I rather be playing than watching 2 hour long frame analysis.

Great analogy.

I think part of the cause is multichoice makes money only if you buy a new decoder.
So each year they make and market a new decoder and tell you that it is better than last year's.

Ok DK Bananza is going to take a while to finish. It's impossible moving around and not destroying everything in sight.

It's very satisfying being this destructive

I know how bad the new screen is, especially how slow it is however... /s

Anyone else feel weird playing the old one?

Not as heavy, smaller fonts, makes you want to go back to the Switch 2. Now the Switch 1 feels too small. And not talking about the lite.
