Switch off to avoid hefty electricity penalties

I got a question. What if you rent a town house and have just taken it over in the last 3 months? Do I have to reduce my consumption from what the previous tenants racked up?

After reading the full article I dont think that Bill will see the light of day. COSATU seem to be a force in the ANC now and theyre not happy with it. I dont see it being passed.

w1z : This is a damn good question, and my guess is the guavamint and Eksdom haven't even begun to think out the logistics involved in this little punishment scheme of theirs.

Whiles the rest of the world are moving away from GAS (FOSIL FUEL) South African are encourage to take a step back in time and move to using gas. I suppose one of these days Eskom will encourage us to cut down the trees to cook on open fires
Thus totally destroying the ozone layer and increasing global warming.

They should not say we are in a crisis because they caused the crisis them selfs by not planing ahead and employing competent managers.

Today I went out and got a solar panel, 12v 7.ah battery and 4 x 12v 0.75watt led down lighters for my kitchen because the kitchen is the heart of our home it was very easy to install it is now up and running It cost me R675.85 for everything, there is only one problem with LEDs they are not bright enough so now the only time we use the main lighting is when we cook and that is +-1hour per day that is now only using 6c a day and that is 3.3 units a month with a savings of 30 units per month

Now you ask why the kitchen? because the kitchen is open with the lounge so when we watch TV we don't use the lounge light we leave the kitchen light on so that the lounge is still dark enough to enjoy the movies

The next step I am going to take is to go out a buy a couple of solar garden lamp and rip it apart and convert all the house table lamps, also into solar power and leave them outside when the battery's go flat

Slowly I am going to do room by room it is nice you don't even have switches to turn the lights no/off it is all done by a remote I hacked from my old alarm system

More savings for me so one day Eskom wont get a cent out of me by the end of the year

You can try this method:

@ both w1z and toxic : I am sure the Constitutional Court will throw the penalties out on their costs.

This electricity issue is going to blow up very soon! We are going to see riots people! Seriously!

Fat cats are sheltered in their own, cozy little worlds.

In "One day in the life of Ivan Denisovich" (by Solzhenitsyn) the following observation is made "A man who is warm, cannot understand a man who is cold" when Ivan Denisovich delivered his team leader's food - Ivan was out in the cold, and the team leader was in the warm room.

The top brass don't want to understand what is going on at the lower levels, it seems to be.

Care to elaborate?

I have spoken to numerous people that are not very happy about having all this added pressure on their monthly expenses. A 50% increase in any of your household bills is not funny.

I don't believe Eskom nor the Government for a minute with their stories. Personally I think in time Eskom's story is going to make Telkom look like a walk in the park. There is a lot we don't know about this behemoth?

High time, I think, that we stop paying our rates and taxes until things get sorted out, yes?

From your text to the SA Taxpayer ears.:p
I don't see it happening Librarian? No consumerism in this country.

One Department called SARS is more efficient than the whole entire Government. Everyone thinks Manuel did it. Yes he had his input, but to me I think it is as simple as they (The Government/ANC) want our money so they jack up SARS, but all other Departments suffer Budgetary Constraints and seemingly endless ineptness which I think is just deliberate manipulation of the status quo.

Of all the suggestions I read here to save electricity, the one about replacing a gaming pc with a laptop had me ROLFLMAO. I would have to bankrupt myself to spec a laptop to what I have built up.

We already use "energy-efficient" globes, have been for years now. Have a gas heater for winter, so there's another saving. We use the stove/oven to cook, you have to eat you know, switch off unnecessary lights, etc. The only possible place where we can possibly save more, is the geyser, but it already has a blanket and timer. I can't possibly take any more steps, and now they want us to save 20% more because of their stuff-ups, while they pay themselves big bonus?. They can blow it out of a rear orifice.

The bottom line is that "saving" Electricity is costly to people making the effort.

I put "saving" in inverted commas as I don't believe you can actually save electricity, but more a case of curbing your usage/capacity at any given time, especially during peak usage periods. Shedding your load/fingerprint on the grid.
E.g. I have 2 geysers with timers. I never have both geysers running at any given time together, thus reducing my load capacity. By doing this my single board never trips even if there are kettles, stoves and the jacuzzi on. Before my board would trip as I had exceeded the rated 60 Amps. :p

This bill has absolutely no thinking behind it. There's no control over the TIME OF DAY the electricity will be used. If I run my washing machine, dish washer, geyser etc during peak times but still "save" (rather reduce) my consumption by 20% I have not contributed one bit to alleviating the crisis which is the demand during peak times.

Agreed.

Cut the bonuses totally - it just is another unneeded expense - and use the money to improve service delivery - or subsidize gas geysers/solar geysers instead.

Our company already have smart buildings. Lights go out automatically after 6pm. Most people uses laptops. We have a generator, but that will cost even more to run than the penalties. How are we supposed to save 20%?

I can only imagine how much thus policy, if implemented, will hurt the economy.

Volgens hom betaal Suid-Afrikaanse verbruikers gemiddeld sowat 2 Amerikaanse sent per kilowatt-uur. “Die koste van nuwe vermoë is egter sowat 10,7 Amerikaanse sent per kilowatt uur. Die prys sal moet styg.”

So we should pay American tariffs, but we earn South African salaries. Same with motor/house industry in our country.

That guy can first start off with cutting out damagement's fat cat bonuses before implementing a price increase.
