'Switch off your lights'

I'd take Telkom over Eskom any day, that's how bad it is. At least Telkom don't load shed our ADSL for a few hours a day.

Long time no see Syndyre. How much of that is Eskum's fault? :D

If this does go through, and it looks like I will be a "repeat offender", I am going to leave ZA. It will be the final straw.
I would have been long gone if the wife did not have such a close extended family unit - this will be the last straw for her. (Maybe a blessing, really).

Moederloos, I understand what you're thinking. If I hadn't already tried that, and found that leaving my family just doesn't work for me, I'd seriously be considering leaving now. Hell, I'm half considering it now even though I know it's not a viable solution for me!

It's just so frustrating.

I don't want to turn this into a Zim 2.0 thread, but seriously: where do you draw the line? Zim is clearly over the line, and I don't think we're there yet, but how do you recognise that point when it's clearly get out time because there's no hope of salvation? Taking into account what a massive thing it is to move countries?

I think this has finally been the last straw for most people. I know a lof of people who are now seriously considering leaving. Before it was only an idea.

None actually, apparently we're on the same circuit as a hospital so we don't get load shedded. :D Been away. :)

This really seems to be the point to me, when they start rationing power you know its time to go.

start a protest...

Everyone in SA switch EVERYTHING ON at 4PM.. maybe Eskom will feel their own wrath :(

I'm aware of many people who actually do this... instead of saving power, they switch EVERYTHING on... it's a special way of protesting :-)

I agree. Its not like I'm getting free electricity, or stealing it. If I was then sure, cap me, fine me - but I am a paying customer! Would be interesting see the %power they would save if they cut off non-paying customers (and also how many votes the ANC would lose?)

If the non-paying customers are cut off, especially those in informal settlements, the ANC will have a picketing & rioting nation at their hands

guys is turning your lights off when u not using them really that bad?

i mean wtf do ppl leave lights on they are not using?

I agree, I hate people who leave all the lights burning in rooms when they are not using them.

Took many beatings of my wife till she stopped leaving a trail of left on lights in her wake :D

Maybe it's the scot in me, but I hate spending money where I don't have to (you saw my headset at Rage ;) ). Our sparks bill is maybe R150pm..

However, thats not the issue here. I pay my bill for what I use, as do most people here. The profits from that should go to continual upgrading of the system, not fat bonuses for CEO's. If the company was managed correctly then this would have been the case, and when the ANC said 'no new power stations' then Eskom management should have investigated what else they could do in the interim to combat what they already knew to be an impending crisis with their profits.

It's too easy for them to pass the buck to the ANC. They are both culpable in this crisis. The ANC for not having the foresight and Eskom for saying it's the ANC's fault, when they (Eskom) had time to put other measures in place.

Cut off those who don't pay or steal the juice. Why should we, the bill paying public, be dictated to about our usage when we fund the system?

Less usage, less income, even less maintainance.

i get the whole i pay for it thing

the way i see it is we can moan and complain and bitch but we still getting cut off

where is that getting us?

all im saying is if we understand the problem is huge and we could help out, then we would be in a better position than moaning and complaining

o could someone explain to me why your pvr on and off in the day would damage it?

i turn off my decoder everyday and its been working for 3 years

same with my pc and most of my appliances

Sure we could be, but the solutions the government comes up with are just so nonsensical that people get frustrated. It doesn't help that nobody takes responsibility and Eskom's managers are paid tens of millions for being useless.

I agree we should all do our bit, but then again when I see Eksom coming up with such k@k ideas and the phat bonuses they're paid I think wtf - why should I save.

If Eskom pulled their finger and withdrew the bonuses and started firing the incompetent managers then maybe more SA's would be willing to help them.

If there is a shortage of something, how can they still give everybody the first 50KWh for free??? Not that I believe it ever was for free, but that is what we have all been told.
Water is life sustaining etc. and exists in nature.
Electricity is generated and similar to any other produced product like a car, tv, cell phone etc. They are not for free - well not to many of us at least.

So you pay for your electricity but use a lot of it and they decide to cut you off!!

So... if I read this right.. then ESKOM are now implementing an electricity cap? ALA TELKOM style, I guess you can never get rid of parasitical tendancies.... Makes me wonder if what the bugger at 1 Time "help desk" last Sunday was true... "Sorry sir, but this is Africa!" and that was after they had decided that they wanted to clean our my bags and take what they wanted! At least I get to claim $25 per KG, but I doubt I will ever see the money :(

And you really think they will be reasonable?

If I want to leave all my lights on and I'm willing to pay the bill then thats fine. The problem lies that Eskom don't take the profit generated from income and expand their capacity, they take it and line their pockets..

Don't act suprised when we're all in the dark very soon.:D

We need to do this en masse tho.
The entire nation at once.
The best time is like 2am - when no load shedding is taking place, so the maximum people are "on the grid".

Just like me - I really am a energy saver - always have been.
Ours is R600-R700 a month tops - and we have a large house, pool etc.

The problem is, people like us are going to be unfairly treated once quotas are introduced. Joe Soap - who wastes like there is no tomorrow, need just switch lights off etc. You and me are going to have to start taking cold showers.

Time to act...

guys is turning your lights off when u not using them really that bad?

So what are you trying to say that it is due to inefficient power usage that SA is on the verge of an implosion?

No I don't think so... if our government only stopped trying to "fix" all the mistakes and unfair treatment of the previous government and concentrated on developing the country successfully, none of us would be worried about scheduling our everyday life around the availability of power!!!

And NO, it is not time to pack our bags and move... IT IS TIME TO ACT!!!
If your boss was driving your brand new Ferrari, and he was heading straight for a wall, would you pull up the handbrake and only worry about minor damage? Would you just close your eyes and then after the impact try for the rest of your life to recover for the unrepairable damage or would you jump out of the car walk away and only worry about how you are going to get a new car?

We can pull the handbrake of our government, long enough have we just sat back and watched where they was taking us... they are the drivers and we are the navigators... We tell them where we want to go!!!!

My question is where do you want to go???

I really dont agree to this......Government plans to implement "smart metering" in residential areas which will enable the municipalities and Eskom to remotely manage customer loads.

No - it will enable them to get the 30%+ increases they really wanted all along.
And I fail to understand what difference my saving 100KW a month could possibly make.
If they continue to build and "grow", that will be too little in 3-4 months.
And winter is just around the corner, too.
