'Switch off your lights'

"We have discussed how quotas will be allocated, who will be exempt from the programme, what incentives and penalties will be in place, when it will start and what legislative enablers we need to have in place for the programme to work,"

Hmm, let me guess who will be exempt.

ANC cronies I'm sure are on the short list, as will be the ANC voter base...

Yet again, the people who actually fund this country are shafted..

TIA? NAE.. (Not An Excuse)

as long as the quotas are reasonable then it shouldn't be too much of a problem

Its unlikely they'll be reasonable with this gov. FFS, I pay for my electricity so I can use my air con when its hot and actually have light, not sit in the dark with a candle.

If you want to save power then cut off those millions of illegal connections and everyone who doesn't pay. But no, they'd never do that.

start a protest...

Everyone in SA switch EVERYTHING ON at 4PM.. maybe Eskom will feel their own wrath :(

I dont need to switch off my lights. In fact I dont need to switch off anything. My power went off at 12:30AM last night and came back 5 minutes ago. That's a blackout of over 12 hours. Thanks Eskom. *****s.

And you really think they will be reasonable?

If I want to leave all my lights on and I'm willing to pay the bill then thats fine. The problem lies that Eskom don't take the profit generated from income and expand their capacity, they take it and line their pockets..

I agree - time to make a "switch everything on" protest.
I am game - anyone else want to join in?

bwahaha

Seriously - I am already using as little as possible - where the heck am I going to find another 10% to "save".

If this does go through, and it looks like I will be a "repeat offender", I am going to leave ZA. It will be the final straw.
I would have been long gone if the wife did not have such a close extended family unit - this will be the last straw for her. (Maybe a blessing, really).

Exactly.

Eskom had the plans for new power sources ready in 1995, the ANC did not go ahead with them as they wanted to save the multibillion rand projects for when they could give it to their "chomies" and cash in on it themselves , now all thats stopping them is the scorpions but hey they wont be a problem for much longer!

I agree. Its not like I'm getting free electricity, or stealing it. If I was then sure, cap me, fine me - but I am a paying customer! Would be interesting see the %power they would save if they cut off non-paying customers (and also how many votes the ANC would lose?)

guys is turning your lights off when u not using them really that bad?

i mean wtf do ppl leave lights on they are not using?

its pretty simple and although we pay for the power we use if this will ease the power cuits then stop moaning about it

its at the point where us as south africans need to look at how we use our power
yes we should not have to, but when your lights go out for 3 hours everyday it might make you think:

ok im not using my computer right now maybe i should power down, the bathroom light has been on all day so let me turn it off because im not using the bathroom

does my tv have to be on when i go to the shop? does my dstv decoder need to on all day when im at work?

my vcr/dvd player, does this need to on all week when i watch dvd's once a week

its time to stop the moaning and start looking at how we use power so we can help and possibly stop the outages or make them once a week

i wish instead of all the threads moaning, there would be more threads on how to save power and what to do and maybe a thread on how we as a community can help the situation

gregg so now the power company should shut off the poor ppl who cannot afford even food so we can have all our appliances on all day?

yea lets screw the poor so we dont have to turn off or watch how we use power

nice

I agree about switching things off when not in use... but everything has a MTBF (Mean time between failure)

Power cycling electronic/electric goods frequently reduces the life span of the equipment by a huge amount.

so to save R100, you risk damaging a R3000 PVR by power-cycling it every day.

Its a calculated risk.

Mine isn't, I turned everything off. Why? Not to save energy, I'm just worried about these power spikes playing havoc with my electronic equipment when I'm not there!

Sigh - here we go again.
I have said this in about 20 threads, let me say it again.

If you save 20% now BEFORE the quotas, you will be screwing yourself.

Imagine:
Joe uses 1000KW
He, on his own initiative, saves 200KW.
Its a bit of a schlepp, and he is hot / cold etc, but he does it.

Come April, eksdom says - Joe, you are using 800KW - you need to cut 20% off that.
So, Joe must now use only 540KW.

By saving 200KW VOLUNTARILY - he has dug a hole for himself - he is already at "barebones" on 800 - WTF must he do now??

DO NOT SAVE POWER NOW!
