'Switch off your lights'

guys is turning your lights off when u not using them really that bad?

i mean wtf do ppl leave lights on they are not using?

its pretty simple and although we pay for the power we use if this will ease the power cuits then stop moaning about it

its at the point where us as south africans need to look at how we use our power
yes we should not have to, but when your lights go out for 3 hours everyday it might make you think:

ok im not using my computer right now maybe i should power down, the bathroom light has been on all day so let me turn it off because im not using the bathroom

does my tv have to be on when i go to the shop? does my dstv decoder need to on all day when im at work?

my vcr/dvd player, does this need to on all week when i watch dvd's once a week

its time to stop the moaning and start looking at how we use power so we can help and possibly stop the outages or make them once a week

i wish instead of all the threads moaning, there would be more threads on how to save power and what to do and maybe a thread on how we as a community can help the situation

gregg so now the power company should shut off the poor ppl who cannot afford even food so we can have all our appliances on all day?

yea lets screw the poor so we dont have to turn off or watch how we use power

nice

Oh my word i found someone on the forums that does not complain.. Its amazing.. Guys all this bitching and moaning is not going to get you any further and by switching all ur appliances on you are making things worse. I understand it is irritating, but gosh the way you people are "dealing" with it is not the proper manner..

Did you read my rebuttal to him?
Perhaps you should.

It is all very well and fine to be positive - even commendable.

But, it is like being on the Titanic when it sinks, and saying: "W00t - I always wanted to try deep sea diving".

So what is the propper manner? Sit in a dark corner and keep quiet?

Eskom

Maybe working together positively instead of destructively on this issue would be better. If we all put on our stuff at the same time, could cause more bad than good and we could be the ones who are suffering more.

Having our power off 2 hrs everyday really sux big time, but I dont want more if I can help it

And I do not see any other way for us to make an impression on guavamint.
I am open to suggestions.

Making an impression on government, by switching on everything hmmmm, now thats thinking like a typical south african. What are you, 12?

The more load shedding there is, the bigger the chance is of people losing there jobs, the more people that lose there jobs, the more stress there is. The more stress there is, the more violence there is...... This means that the chance is higher for someone you care about to get hijacked, shot or worse. All because we wanted to make a statement to the government.

Thats the best way to start a debate - insult people. I always know when someone has no argument, by the fact of them attacking the person they are debating.

Make a suggestion then - how would you make an impression.
The majority of the population burns down buildings, toyi toyis and riots.
That always seems to work.

LOL, what I am trying to say is that everyone putting on their lights and all the equipment etc is not the way to get government to listen. Trying to get the government to listen, is like shouting and screaming at a 2 month old baby and trying to force it to speak or eat solids, it just aint going to happen.

The problem with everyone putting on their lights etc, is that it will probably just cause more hassels and will probably backfire on all of us, causing more hassels than it worth. The government was warned about these issues 10 years ago and they did absolutely nothing about it. This problem has been coming for a long time.

There are so many suggestions one can make, but it is probably like farting against thunder, just no point.

The problem is that if you all put your equipment and lights on at the same time to "show the government" and we all sit with longer hours of load shedding because the government is "showing us" then what you going to do?

Except, a concerted and continuous campaign like this will put immense pressure on them - and it will be impossible for them to identify one "culprit" to apprehend - or "silence".

How long do you reckon one man, standing up to them, will remain able to stand?

No - mob mentality is the only way to get Africa to deal with a problem - well, not ignore it, anyways.

what you'll probably find is we'll implement all these energy saving strategies , buy gas stoves and fridges and even install solar or wind generators... demand will drop significantly... just in time for elections next year.... and I can just hear old JZ and chommies already:

"Look what the wondafull gauvamint we are to have solved this powa problehms cozzed by the leggassy of apartheid. eish! and we meneged it withonly owselves and our mchini guns"

and "no need to build new power stations - plenty of capacity"....

Well, I just boiled the kettle for a cup of tea - hopefully that has not interrupted the work of a Zimbabwean torturer - I hear those electric-nad shockers use a bit of juice.

Seriously - I am already using as little as possible - where the heck am I going to find another 10% to "save".
If you already are (like me too - have basically for years in fact) then probably you won't have to worry about these rations. It'll hit these people who keep insisting on sitting with their aircons all day etc. and continuing to use as much as they want, and who are too lazy to change incandescents with CFLs etc.

What I'm wondering though is how are they going to calculate the ration? Based on each individual's past usage? If so, I'll be screwed BECAUSE I've already optimised my electricity usage (and if I get one more employee now, or one more rentor etc., my usage will go up. Will everyone get the ration, or only those above a certain usage? Will it be based on the size of what you live in? How many people live in the house? How many bedrooms? Will each unit in a townhouse complex get the same limit? The administration will be a nightmare to figure out "fairly", so they'll have to impose some blanket limits that will surely not be fair.

If everyone puts on all their lights etc. to protest, then all that will happen is I (like many other business owners) will again be sitting with even less electricity, definitely nobody will have aircon or TV or games or shops, more jobs will be lost etc. - thanks for that useful suggestion. I understand that protest is in order, but cutting off your nose to spite your face isn't the best way. The government isn't introducing rations randomly as an arbitrary move just to be *******s - there really is, quite literally, a smaller electricity supply than demand on a failing poorly maintained infrastructure. This is objective reality, physics, "the real world" etc. ... the most fantastic government in the entire would still be no match for physics - even the absolute best possible government response theoretically and humanly possible would still AT BEST mean shortages for years to come, because physics dictates that it just takes years to build new power plants (ones that can "only" take a year if pushed through as an emergency are also highly expensive, another reality nobody can change short of inventing better technologies).

As jeinnor30 said, "Trying to get the government to listen, is like shouting and screaming at a 2 month old baby and trying to force it to speak or eat solids, it just aint going to happen". We have to accept that we now live in what has for some time been approaching an anarchy, or emigrate --- an ineffective, useless government is in many respects similar to no government. Maybe government will fix this problem, it's questionable if they are capable of doing so. Get generators and UPSs, solar if you can afford it. (And to all you people who didn't vote in the last few elections, this is partly your fault, you could've made a difference (yes, it's true, do the math - ANC's major lead is thanks to voter apathy).)

The bolded bit is my point exactly.

I am disappointed with the suggestions. I was expecting a bit more thinking out of the box, I am not even sure there was enough thinking in the box. The rationing in industries is going to be detrimental to economic growth, unless and I hope this is the case, industries as a whole are very electricity inefficient.

Edit: I just read something on iol.co.za and I would like to add that Alec Erwin, you are a f*cken lying c*nt!

The only box involved with guavamints thinking, is the "boxes" doing said thinking.

And you really think they will be reasonable?

If I want to leave all my lights on and I'm willing to pay the bill then thats fine. The problem lies that Eskom don't take the profit generated from income and expand their capacity, they take it and line their pockets..

It's not fine. Besides Eskom which can't produce enough - because they're incompetent like the government - there's also pollution and green house
gasses. You're screwing up MY air with your electricity wastage. I don't think that's fair at all. Quotas on petrol, electricty and other forms of energy are actually a good idea. Even if you can afford to pay it's no excuse to destroy something we all need, share and which cannot be repaired.

Then go for nuclear, no CO2 emissions to worry about.
