Switching from Android to Apple - What made you switch?

Actually forgot about this one. Bought my wife an AW and let her use my old iPhone to set it up since she still has an Android phone and she absolutely loves her watch so much so that she is considering an iPhone for her next upgrade after seeing how much better the AW is than her previous Huawei.

I'm not comparing specs. I'm comparing functionality. Something that should not differ regardless of generation, unless there is something unsavory happening on the software level. Apple have admitted to this in the past.

Basically, and my opinion, if you don't have the latest gen iphone and probably it's predecessor, you will bump into problems.

There are a lot of reasons to like Apple, there are just as many to dislike it.
I want an Apple watch but I also dont want to charge it every day, I cant justify spending R9k on a watch with such short battery life. Android watches are a lot cheaper, have longer battery life and do most of the things Apple watches do.

Im still in the Garmin camp with watches because of battery life, they do smart notifications which is about all I really care about.

Had the Xperia Z1 which was a phone I really enjoyed (coming off the back of a broken BlackBerry Bold 9900 2 weeks before my contract was up). I would probably have stayed on Android, but the Z5 was something like R300 more on the same contract, whilst the iPhone 6 was R20 cheaper than the Z1.
I had an Apple iPad Air2 (still do), liked the way it worked and switched.
I have stayed on iOS since 2014.

It’s not as customisable , but everything just works, as it should, across all the devices , what works on my iPhone 12, works exactly the same as in my daughters 6s

Apps also seem more “polished” on iOS to me

I have an X - 3 gens behind, no problems

Wife has 7+ - 5 gens behind, no problems
 
My reasons why I switched
1. I use Apple Carplay, was the first that was available. Google Drive was activated later, but didn't work that well. Might be better now, but then it wasn't.
2. I got the Apple Watch for almost free on Vitality and it only works on an iPhone.
3. I don't spend so much time to get my phone right as I did when I was on Android. I mean, you literally couldn't change anything when I switched, but it didn't feel like I had to.
4. Continuity - seemless switching between my MAC, iPad and iPhone.

I tried out iOS a few times in the past and it just didn't work for me in the early days, because of the restrictions on 3G etc. Especially since I didn't have Wifi back then. The last time I tried it, it stuck because it worked for how I used my phone. I think it probably worked the best for how I use my phone. But this will be personal to you. So make a list of what you use your phone for and see if you can fit in with the way apple does those things. Because there are a few things people come from Android may not like.

I used Android since 2010. Back in the early 2010s I hated how limited iOS was in functionality but I liked how efficient, consistent and clean its UI was, I also liked how Apps seem to “run better” on iOS and seem to take better advantage of the hardware e.g. Instagram and Snapchat on iOS seem to have full access to the Camera

When the Xs Max arrived and I first used it it felt truly “premium”, it’s whole aesthetic with its heavy feel and stainless steel frame just worked for me and a few months after trying it out I jumped on it.

The accessory support is also insane. The overall convenience is just great and then finally the long update support, I am toying with the idea of canceling my contract and simply continuing to use my 11 Pro Max for 2-3 years as it will get many more iOS iterations, so I am not worried about it being left behind.

And finally the whole ecosystem is just great, between my iPhone, iPad Pro and Apple Watch, very seamless, consistent and easy, I just feel like I do less management of my devices now, everything seems to just be so well synced, and when I had a MaBook Air it was great how the data between the phone and the laptop flowed, will definitely being getting an Apple Silicone based MBA soon.

I've been using the iPhone 6S and there are so many gripes I have with it, and the brand:
1. Lightning cable malfunctions after a while and you need to buy a new cable ( something I've never experienced with anything using micro-usb)
2. Some wifi connections just don't work.
3. Signal loss for no reason. Turn on/off flight mode and signal comes back.
4. Something not lakka with the battery. Drains quickly, and, some days it can run on 1% for 30minutes and other times it will shutdown at around 7% and won't turn on until charged.
5. Phone gets insanely hot when being used whilst charging.

Conspiracy would be there is purposeful software causing this since the phone is 5 generations behind or it's just a kak phone.

How old is this phone exactly?

It doesn’t sound very new.

Also lightning cables breaking is almost always user inflicted. It has a part to pull on, you don’t pull on the cord.

But the other issues sound like a damaged phone, especially the antenna.

Which would also use more battery due to working harder.

The “Back” gesture,

On Android it can be done from either side of the phone,

On iPhone, only from the left of the phone,

Unless I’m missing something,

Left is back and right is forward. Which is the natural order of things and how windows are arranged in the UI.

Why would anyone ever go back by using the right side of the screen? It’s an illogical shortcut.

That’s one single gesture. Not gestures, plural.

And a perfectly logical one.

It’s not missing anything. It just makes sense.

Apologies,
Gesture, not gestures.

Coming from Android I was just used to using either side to go back,

Overall, I’m happy with the switch,

BTW, I didn’t know that swiping from the right hand side was to go forward,

The inherent design is based on things like say Safari with a left (back) to right (forward) design. But it applies to equally to anything else across the OS like books or whatever uses the same inherent “paging” system.

Therefore it would he illogical and cause a “brain freeze” moment to have back on the right hand side for some things while it’s forward for just about everything else.

It’s exactly these kind of things that confuse the **** out of me on Android.

Using Android for so long you just get used to some things, but now, I don’t think I’ll go back to using Android.


Enjoying the Apple Watch as well (Besides battery life on that)
