HI there, I'm currently an mweb ADSL subscriber, but their rates are too expensive - I'm considering switching to SA online which offers a 10gb cap with dual logons for the same price as mweb's 6 gb package.

I need to know:

1. is anybody here using SAOL and if so, how is their service?

2. Since i'm in cape town and their HQ is in DUrban, will it cause my connection to run slower at all?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

I'm currently on their dual 10GB cap, the service is fine and there are no major troubles.

The city diffrence makes no diffrence as you will connect to the ADSL network within 5KM of your house and only use SAOL for authentication.

Other than that you are in telkom's 'capable' hands regardless of where you are.

Cygus - Glad you realised MWeb is the most expensive South African ISP. They are very similar to AOL in the states, sell exorbitant priced services to the masses that do not know better. Don't for a second think they became this big by being the best. They simply bought out any decent ISP over the years. And their customer support services suck...

SAOL is a safe bet. Speeds will be the same throughout the country. Another mentionable option is WebAfrica.

saol is awesome i think ive never had any problem with them

dont use mweb they are as bad as telkom

and their damn help desk is run by ppl who help you via a freakin manual and dont know jack **** about anything other than that manual

MWeb

I was with Mweb only because they bought over IAfrica's client base. I must say that after being a MWeb member for many years I don't think there were really any benefits to being with them. They were really crappy - and they try to justify their exorbitant monthly subscriptions with their "value-added services" like the online encyclopedia, anti-virus and anti-spam scanning. Their customer service sucks just as much. The only thing MWeb is interested in is signing you on - forget about getting any benefits from them afterwards.

I wish they had an emoticon for "sucks" because I would use it right now.

So far, so good

I've been with them for 4 months now on the 10 GB package, and speeds and service have been fine in my experience. I'm in jhb, and there hasn't been any geographical issues for me.

MWeb is a rip off - wayyy too expensive!

I have an MWeb R145 dial up account so that I can keep my email box going.
I have had that mail box since the 90's.
I will change one of these days.

At the time I was very disappointed moving to MWeb, as I was with a company called "Dockside" which had good ping's to overseas gaming servers even on 56k, as I was playing the first version of MS Combat Flight Sim on-line at the time.
The moment we were moved to MWeb the ping's fell to 800ms and the game was virtually unplayable.

Other than that what can an ISP offer me.
A connection and email if I need it? With ADSL it really makes no difference as we all go through Telkom, so price is a deciding factor.
I have used MWebs On-line Album and the Genealogy website called Learning On-line or MWeb Ancestry run by Heather MacAlister, which I find interesting and worthwhile.
I don't get viruses and very little spam in my Email Box, which is a plus.

I wont mention who I have my ADSL Account with, but it does 30Gb. :D
