I'm planning to buy some stuff - harddrive, sd cards, etc - and it seems to have come down to a choice between sybaritic and take2.

Sybaritic are a bit cheaper, but I'm a bit concerned about their shipping. Their attitude seems to be that as soon as they give it to the couriers, it's yours and anything that breaks is your responsibility, unless you take their insurance.

Similarly, if you get a faulty product, or it becomes faulty further down the line, you have to pay for the shipping backwards and forwards. Now considering my bad luck with electronics lately, and considering the number of times I've had to send a particular pair of headphones back to kalahari.net, I'm not sure if this is a good idea.

On the other hand, I don't know what Take2's policy is. Can anyone recommend one over the other? I'm more interested in stories where things have gone wrong, and hearing how they dealt with it, than in reports of everything going without a hitch.

I've used Sybaritic before and their couriers suck. I ordered a DVD writer and then box came all smashed up, luckily the drive was fine.

Take2 seems to be a bigger operation, I'd go for take2, haven't used them before though.

Take 2 also update their products daily, if you're in Cape Town (which you are) I'd go for them, only R29 on the shipping or just collect it.

If there's a significant price difference you might want to go with Sybaritic, but I'd check out prophecy.co.za as well, free shipping over R1000 and it's always worked well for me. Sorry nothing has gone wrong the few times I've ordered.

Take2 hands down... I never had problems with them EVER, and they email if anything happens (eg. delivery might be a bit late, cancel or leave).

When I ordered from Sybaritic, they didn't bother using brown paper or anything to conceal the package, they just let the post office send it, stickers on the box. I'm quite amazed that it didn't get stolen. I won't be using them again in the future.
I've dealt with Take2 and Prophecy Shop, both have decent courier services and the support via e-mail is good (prophecy shop's better actually). Also the free shipping with prophecy for orders above R1000, as Ekhaatvensters mentioned, really makes them a good choice.
When I'm looking for hardware, I check out both shops (prophecy and take2) and order from the one with the better price/recommended brands. :)
If sybaritic is way cheaper than prophecy, I suggest you email prophecy and ask them if they could adjust their price a bit, even if it's still a tad more expensive, at least you'll get good service :)

PS: With Prophecy shop they seem to add insurance with their courier shippings, even if free shipping applies (noticed this with some RAM I ordered)

Cathryn, you are in Cape Town, so is Take 2. It would be cheaper since you don't have to pay for couriers although it's only R29, but the main thing is, you will be able to return it easier if there's a problem ;)

I like both companies, although I agree with a comment above, Sybaritic should conceal and seal all packages. I bought a steering wheel quite a while ago and I must admit that I was damn lucky it wasn't stolen, since the box had a huge picture with only a post office sticker ;)

Ya ... courierwise Take2 will be cheapest unless your order is over R1000 ... unfortunately my online shop hasn't got to the cheap stage with couriers yet ... and until my new site goes up hopefully at end of November, my prices are gonna suck cause I've been too lazy to update. But you could always e-mail me ... my service is great ;) ... but after November ... check out my site ... hopefully I'll be able to sort something out with the couriers for next year.
I better shut up before people think I'm vain :P

I've used both Sybaritic/Take 2 and Prophecy, my vote is for Prophecy! Their shipping is always insured and free for orders over R1000 and I recently received a damaged component from them for which they organized a courier to come get the item from me (for no charge).

Also their prices are on par with Sybaritic and Take 2 in most cases I've seen...

As a side note on Sybaritic, my advice, stay away, had a problem where I returned a damaged item and the guy kept ignoring me until the point I told him he had 3 days before I take the case to court, not to mention I bought a motherboard from them, and when I got the package some items where missing from the box (Connectors and such, with some of the wrapping already opened, WTF!), the motherboard was damaged and it looked used, luckily I got swapped for a brand new sealed box!

Also the courier sucks big time, the guy delivered a computer case to me on a motorcycle (Gigabyte Poseidon Case), and if you've seen the size of that case you'd see why it's a very bad idea to deliver that item on a bike...

Stay away from Sybaritic!

EDIT: Yay 500Posts! LOL :D

You decide on the courier with Sybaritic...so it's your choice what type of service you want. I myself have Never had Any problems with Sybaritic. Sybaritic FTW!

For CPT, Take2 should do. I intensely dislike their policy of first charging you and then ordering the stuff. On 2 occasions I was left waiting more than 5 weeks for items to ship. There's also http://www.buycomputers.co.za in CPT, who have been praised by buyers.

Sybaritic here in Jhb have been fast on email replies and I like their prices, but it doesn't make sense to order something from here, for delivery in CPT. Use Take2 and if you're close enough just collect from them

I have to admit, I too have never had a problem with Sybaritic but then again I always go and pick up. At least with them they always check their supplier's stock before money is transferred.

As for Take2, I use them a lot too and I have never had a problem with them. I had a fault TV capture card that was nearing it's end of warranty. They organised a courier to pick it up and drop the replacement one off. There only disclaimer in this regard is that the if the fault was caused by you or if there is no fault at all you'll be responsible for the courier costs.

So, since you're in CT, go take2.

Thanks all; looks like I'll probably go with Prophecy. Their pricing works out the same as sybaritic, but free shipping; and their support seems to be more on a level with Take2 - so it's a win all round :)

And just as a bonus, I really like Prophecy's site. It's neat, and it's easy to find what you're looking for.

Sybaritic is very friendly and helpful, Take2 less so but have a wider range of products. I've never had a problem with Sybaritic but I've had a few with Take2.
