Today Sydney was enveloped in red dust. A dust storm blown in from the severely drought affected interior. While fairly common in the drought areas, it's extremely rare for these storms to reach Sydney.

An Audio report with beautiful but eerie Slideshow here

I think the media is capitalising on the Drama. Bushfires are of course common in Oz, but earthquakes of any high magnitude are rare.

The 'tremors' (as they should be called) in Victoria today, were magnitude 3 and 2.6 with little reported damage and no injuries.

A number of years ago the city of Newcastle had a moderate surprise Earthquake, but if you consider Australia is 1000's of km's from the Pacific Ring of Fire and New Zealand is right on it. They have a far greater prospect for Bumpy Times.

Regarding the dust storm, it really should be an alarm bell for us all. One Planet.

Apparently this is very common in Beijing.

Yes, as a way to fight dust storms, Beijing has a bureau called the Beijing Weather Modification Office whose purpose is to artificially make rain by seed bombing clouds!

Sydney on the otherhand has relaxed their Water Restrictions so people can use hose-pipes to wash the dust away.

And on an amusing note, a friend in Sydney said on his Facebook page - "woke up feeling a little dusty then looked outside and felt much better in the knowledge that it wasn't just me!"

Heard this on the radio yesterday -

" The cause of the massive dust storm in Australia has been discovered - the Oz Rugby Union opened their trophy cupboard "
;)

And the dust landed up in New Zealand today, making for muddy cars.
