Symbian Belle > Android

Oh and I am no Nokia fanboi. I like Android a lot. I've posted lots of positive stuff about Android. My YouTube channel is filled with awesome Android videos. But Android is not perfect and I don't appreciate being attacked by fanboi tinkerers for praising Nokia.

I can't really see the point in Fanboys, whether they like Android or Nokia. Personally I prefer Symbian, simply because it does what I want it to better than Android. I use my phone primarily for phoning, mail for Exchange, IMAP mail, video watching, music listening and as a GPS.

All the above was supplied and is maintained by the manufacturer. I haven't had any issues ever with any of the functions listed above. OVI maps is primarily offline, with minimal data use for A-GPS and traffic updates. The traffic updates are great, especially if you've missed the last traffic report on radio. Mail for Exchange is fully integrated from the beginning - if I create an appointment on my phone it saves it to Mail for Exchange by default.

On Android, I had to download a separate app to access the corporate directory on mail for exchange, I had to download a widget to switch the 3G off (Skype and Kindle app updates chow bandwitdth!), and I can't seem to define separate bandwidth destinations with corresponding access points. Maybe there's an app for that - I couldn't find one.

So for me, Symbian is just so much easier and better integrated.

That said, I understand why so many people like Android. Development is more open and applicable to a wider range of handsets. There are many more apps than on Symbian, even without rooting your phone (which I did, in any case). For example - I'm looking for an app that allows me to play my music by folder. Every artist has a "Greatest Hits" cd, and arranging by artist or by album messes up my playlist. On Android I had enough choices to find something that works, on Symbian I can't find anything, unless I'm willing to crack my phone, which is more involved than rooting an Android phone.

So yeah, each of the two has advantages and disadvantages. And as for the users: each to his own. I prefer Symbian. You prefer Android. That does not make me a better person than you, or more clever, or more tech savvy. Bashing Symbian will not make me like Android more or Symbian less. It might convince me that the basher is incapable of objectively talking about the subject, though.

Symbian Belle looks impressive! Currently running Symbian Anna on my N8 and its much smoother than the previous firmware. It's a breath of fresh air no doubt. I think the N8 with Belle will really be a top notch device, given it's hardware capabilites and the much cheaper price compared to the top-end Android devices. Ovistore has everything I want as well. Wonder if there will be firmware updates after Belle............

For those that compare Nokia to Android.

1) Nokia is a handset manufacturer.
2) Android is an O/S.

So when comparing, I suggest you compare handset to handset (Not Handset to O/S).

I have a galaxy S2. I got this after my N97 (which was terrible)

I moved away from nokia after the N97 ordeal. I had a chance to look at the symbian update.

I must admit that there were big improvements since the ordeal with my n97. I actually like what was done with the updates. The software is really much more usable since what I used on the N97.

Agreed, the Nokia n97 was a terrible phone. I think the n97 was what played a huge part in killing Symbian. It was released as a great flagship device in the USA and after the first bunch of reviews saying it was terrible nobody bought the device. It was compared to the iphone at the time (nokia promised UI smoothness like the in iphones) and failed at it terribly.

If nokia instead of the n97 crap released the n8/e7/c7 etc at the same time, I believe symbian would not be dead but thriving, because if it does well in the American market, developers get involved, and companies invest in software.

I think that is part of Symbian's demise as well, development and lack of support to developers.

I developed a Symbian app for my previous company that linked to the in house ERP system using gprs and sms's for data transfer and used by the external sales force. I must say it is the worse eco system I ever developed for in my life. In fact I still have nightmares about it. (This was back in the Communicator days ie: 9110/9210/9500)

All I see in this thread is fanboi this and fanboi that, from both sides. I could swear that one of the forum rules say that only people over 18 are allowed to join :/

You not hearing me. Is there any point debating you. you are like those fools who customize the 'rides' with all sorts of ridiculous supermarket accessories including that horrendous orange paint, green racing stripes and neon light around the number plate or under the car, but can't keep their cars straight because their control arm busches are fcked, shocks are worn, alignments off, etc etc etc

In case you missed it Android is growing at a crazy rate. that means it is not solely the domain of tinkerer fanbois like you.

some people want things simple and efficient. sorry you find that so disgusting. Nokia/symbian has been refined over a considerable time. there are benefits to that. apple is polished in most ways but there are holes. you have to give Nokia credit for doing the basics right.

No offence but you should be getting an iphone. They are great for people that want what you mentioned with simple functionality. The only difference is that they actually have an app market with stuff in it that someone might want, nokia doesnt.

I believe it was also built into HTC Sense before already? :wtf:
maemo phones have not been released but th actual OS has been around for years (been sitting with Intel and nokia for a while). Any way HTC sense (android) and Maemo are built into Linux based OS's so high probability its open source, but I could be wrong

No offence rboy but i don't think you know what you're talking about. I think even Larry Page would give credit where it's due to competitors.

I don't think Google wants Android to be the sole domain of fanboi tinkerers. It certainly isn't unreasonable to expect some improvements from Android on these basic issues.

I'm tired of this thread, fanbois are irritating ;)

Or I know what Im talking about and you dont. Tell me, have you ever owned an android or an iphone? Well I have both and have more than a year of operating both.
My brother has a N8. So what I can tell you about the requirements that you made is that the iphone suits them best without tinkering. The nokia might also do those things but the app store is useless and the developers for it are left hand throwers in comparison to the android/iphone devs.
I prefer android but then that would be because I like my phone to be customisable to exactly my needs.
So get yourself some edumacations before you run off making all kinds of claims.

Lol....From the moment I saw the title of the thread, I knew things couldn't end well.

Different phones and platforms suite different people......... Everyone is going to defend the platform they use.

The classic example of this is looking at forums with threads such as "Android vs iPhone", "Xbox vs PS3", "Microsoft vs Apple" and "Tablet vs Notebook"

The users really bash eachother in threads like those.

These threads eventually have no useful outcome.
