Synced but no internet?

Since getting 4mb uncapped ADSL last Monday I had random low speeds (often below 0.8) and disconnects every 10 mins-2hrs that were only resolved by resetting the router. The router (Netgear N150) remained synced but the internet light went red and there was no connectivity. Resetting the router seemed to temporarily correct the problem, but obviously having to constantly reset the router and put up with random low speeds is extremely annoying. I reported this problem to Telkom and two days later they said that they fixed the issue and closed the report (without notification), but nothing changed and the disconnects continued. I then reported the problem to Afrihost and double checked router settings etc. but found everything was correct on my side. As suggested I also tried a different router and the problem persisted. SNR margin (12-14) and attenuation (32.5) seem fine and I can view them at all times even when the net has dropped.

Four days ago router resets stopped working and I was constantly without internet. Shortly afterwards, the net at my work (which has been working for over a year without issues) had the same problem. Synced but no internet, and resetting ports and resetting the router made no difference. My work is only about a kilometer away and is on the same exchange, so it seems to be an exchange issue. Today Telkom supposedly fixed the problem and I managed to get online again at both PCs after they reset the ports.

However, now it's back to the original random disconnects on my new line. Does anyone have a clue what the problem is here and how to convince Telkom to fix it? They just seem to be completely failing to grasp the situation (as usual).

Ahhh someone with the same issue as me...
Trust me they'll blame your router and your ISP

Is your ISP Openweb by any chance?

That's what they do when they don't feel like fixing it. All too easy to do it, and there's no disciplinary recourse. Back in the day when I worked for them, if I even DARED pull schitt like this I would be fired!

Afrihost. Though I'm with a different ISP at my work and it's the same issue on the same exchange.

I am having the exact same issue, ADSL stays synced but no ISP will connect. First went down on Wednesday.
Late Friday I get a connection for the first time but it seems its not fixed and just randomly works when it wants, now I am getting the intermittent disconnects which sometimes lasts up to 3 hours.

Reported a line fault and contacted them on twitter and of course the reply would be , "We see it is resolved, you are connected" ......

I fear this might not be resolved anytime soon :(

Me too.

Mweb. Service was intermittently being dropped all week. Called their helpdesk on Tuesday night around 21h45. "You are No 1 in the queue." Bliss. Went through settings with operator, he could see that there was a problem. Then, at 22h05, the line just went dead, mid-sentence. Called again - "Our hours are 0800-22h00.|Please call then." Guess it was home-time.
Exchanged the router (MWeb FON) with old router (which still had MWeb acct settings) - worked immediately. So ascribed it to the router. Service was still intermittently slow, but there.
Then yesterday around 09h00 it died. Reset router, reconnected, but had to repeat numerous times. Until finally, early last night, it completely dies. Syncs, but no connection.
Called helpdesk again. Again, they could see the problem, acknowledge that it exists (something like "it won't authorise") - but with no answer. Reset the port, but no luck. So still no service.

Me too, exact same thing... I call it a ''brain fart'', internet gets slower and slower then no throughput with internet light green, then internet light goes red, then off and then sometimes reconnects or I have to restart the router and then things are back to normal.

Line and data with Afrihost, sent them all info they requested and they opened a fault with Telkom but actually haven't heard anything else in 3 weeks.

Sounds like either an account issue or your router is heating up and slowing the connection down :(

Try PMing Afriman for Support, he is extremely efficient!

It in fact may not be the MWEB centre cutting out, but rather your phone line?

This could mean that your router is having to resync every few minutes due to the phone line cutting out. Just a theory.

Does your connection stay synced when on another ISP's test account?

Hmm... what you could try is a test account from another ISP to see whether it is the ISP giving issues :)

Yea, sounds like an exchange issue here :(

Try contacting your local telkom office as opposed to the hotline - it usually gets things done faster :)

Thanks for the reply.
Hope you see something I may have missed :) Would be wonderful to have a working connection again

It "spazzed out" just now, so having to post this from Wimax :(

Here is what I have tried so far
3 ISP accounts: Web Africa Capped, Afrihost Capped and Telkom Uncapped.
2 Routers : DuoPlus 300WR , Dlink DSL-2750U

When the connection goes on the fritz all accounts throw the following error "Error 651 : the modem (or other connecting device) has reported an error."
Log from the router :

Apr 5 10:53:29 daemon crit syslog: Clear IP addresses. Connection DOWN.
Apr 5 10:53:29 daemon crit syslog: Clear IP addresses. PPP connection DOWN.
Apr 5 10:53:38 daemon notice syslog: PPP: Start to connect ...
Apr 5 10:54:04 daemon notice syslog: PPP: Start to connect ...

Start to connect will go on until the connection comes back.
Then the following happens

Apr 5 11:24:53 daemon crit syslog: PPP server detected.
Apr 5 11:24:53 daemon crit syslog: PPP session established.
Apr 5 11:24:54 user warn kernel: wp1=3c wp2=00
Apr 5 11:24:54 user warn kernel: e126wp1=00 wp2=3c
Apr 5 11:24:55 daemon crit syslog: PPP LCP UP.
Apr 5 11:25:06 daemon crit syslog: Received valid IP address from server. Connection UP.

When it's back all my ISP accounts work 100%

Having the same problem. Stays synced but no connectivity and needs router reset to fix. Tried with two routers to eliminate router problem. I also know someone else in JHB with the same problem.

Definitely sounds like an exchange issue. Is it possible for you to go to your neighbours and check that their internet is working :)

Also - make very sure that you have POTS filters on everything, including alarms, phones etc etc :)

Can you call during the time it wont sync?

Did manage to find someone that I think is on the same exchange "Same first 6 Digits, lives about 4 blocks away" ,found out his is offline just as mine went down again.

So I assume that confirms a problem on Telkom side.

It's not account, had it with Mweb as well and it's not router cos had it with my previous router as well. Afrihost have sent through to Telkom as I said but sweet f-all from their side... It works more often than not and last time I tried to get Telkom to fix my line I was without internet for a week so don't want to risk it.

Had this happen to me last night. Wanted to change ISP's for gaming, router synced the dsl line, but would not connect to ISP. Thought it might be webafrica, so I switched back to Telkom, but it did not want to connect to Telkom now either, tried two more ISP's and a different router, same thing, sync dsl line but no connection. It eventually connected by itself after 10pm, but died again just after midnight.
