Synced but no internet?

I've been having this same problem for over a month now. Have to reset my router daily.

It's about time that I call Telkom, although, judging from the posts here, it might take another few months to sort out the problem.

Finally managed to get a technician to come over. He didn't know what the problem was but he phoned a supervisor who said it sounded like a problem with the UMC. So we'll see if anything gets done...

Annnnd they just phoned back to say that it's an underground cable that need to be replaced and that's why it's dropping the connection. Seems unlikely to me, but new cables probably aren't a bad thing I guess...

Over six weeks now. More incompetent technicians. Six fault closures without my consultation. Replying "No" to the SMS's doesn't help.

Since getting 4mb uncapped ADSL last Monday I had random low speeds (often below 0.8) and disconnects every 10 mins-2hrs that were only resolved by resetting the router. The router (Netgear N150) remained synced but the internet light went red and there was no connectivity. Resetting the router seemed to temporarily correct the problem, but obviously having to constantly reset the router and put up with random low speeds is extremely annoying. I reported this problem to Telkom and two days later they said that they fixed the issue and closed the report (without notification), but nothing changed and the disconnects continued. I then reported the problem to Afrihost and double checked router settings etc. but found everything was correct on my side. As suggested I also tried a different router and the problem persisted. SNR margin (12-14) and attenuation (32.5) seem fine and I can view them at all times even when the net has dropped.

Four days ago router resets stopped working and I was constantly without internet. Shortly afterwards, the net at my work (which has been working for over a year without issues) had the same problem. Synced but no internet, and resetting ports and resetting the router made no difference. My work is only about a kilometer away and is on the same exchange, so it seems to be an exchange issue. Today Telkom supposedly fixed the problem and I managed to get online again at both PCs after they reset the ports.

However, now it's back to the original random disconnects on my new line. Does anyone have a clue what the problem is here and how to convince Telkom to fix it? They just seem to be completely failing to grasp the situation (as usual).

Sorry to hear that you've been battling for so long. This does sound like a Telkom issue with routing traffic and opening sessions (probably to do with IP allocation).

Could you please drop me a PM with the current status on this issue? :(

Hey , I joined this forum just to post in this thread, I have been having this issue for the past month or two with my adsl connection, I'm with mweb (for the time being) , I cant even recall how many times I've been on the phone with an operator , I received a call from a telkom technician two days ago , he starts telling me that I am 3.3 away form the exchange therefore I cant have a 6 meg account , I am on a 4 meg account with mweb but i never get close to that speed , all my speed tests give a maximum of 3.4 when the connection is working , So I looked and the router was now syncing at 6 megs I don't know if this was an attempt to fix the issue of me not getting close a to a 4 meg connection or not but I wasn't informed about it. I have exactly the same issues as most of the posters here , My connection drops an re-syncs at low speeds , after which the internet may or may not work , I have gone through the rigmarole of testing with the guest telkom account, it gives higher speeds than my mweb account does on the saix.net speed test. I have sent records of speed tests that i took when the connection syncs at lower speeds. I am convinced the issue is at the exchange , as there are times when the line is operating at 100% for +- 3 hours.

Yet another incompetent technician on Sat afternoon. Because the net happened to be up when he was there (disconnects are further apart on weekends) he said there was nothing he could do and he didn't know what the problem was. He suggested that I wait until it's completely broken and then report it again. Seriously.

Two months of putting up with this BS now. Report fault, technician comes over a week later and doesn't know what the problem is, guesses and fiddles with port, closes fault without authorisation. Report new fault, back of queue. Multiply by 8 times.

Fantastic system you have, guys.
