System build noob hits snafu

Okay, so PSU and GPU arrived. Putting them in was fine. Connecting everything up went, as far as I know, decently. And right now I would be booting up for the first time except...the damn Odin PSU's CPU power cable (8 pin) doesn't even come CLOSE to reaching the connector on the MOBO. It only gets about half way across the board and the connector is right on the far side.

So I guess I need to call around and see if I can find some kind of an extension. Gah.
 
an Odin is not a bottom of the range psu. my psu is much weaker than that and it's no problem.
 
Well the motherboard goes in according to where the Coolermaster Cosmos back plate is, which is right at the top of the case where the CPU connector is. And right at the very bottom is the PSU.

Where are Chaos situated?
 
I took another look at the Cosmos manual I found (USA Coolermaster website). The parts list includes an 8-pin accessory cable. Any chance you might have put it aside with the other bits and pieces when you were battling with the mobo and CPU?

As I understand it, it's precisely because the PSU isn't high up that Dazzazzad is having a cabling problem! :D

But Juggy, your 1kW PSU is probably running at less than 50% of rated load, worst case - see tests done at THW. A good quality PSU yes, but a HUGE PSU, to run a single GPU, single HD system? What's the point? I'd rather spend the money on more RAM, or a faster GPU.
 
Ok, fans are spinning well. Can't check the CPU temp yet cos the monitor, when turned on, says "digital,analog, digital, analog..." before finally settling on a screen that says "check cable connection - analog"

I'm using the DVI cable. I thought it was one or the other but must I actually use that as well as the d-sub?

No, higher power PSU's generally come with longer cables because they're installed in bigger cases due to more hardware. I tried 4 PSU's before I found one that had cables long enough to be run stealthily in my case. The 8 pin CPU cable is still a tiny bit too short so I had to use an extension.

Just the one, if dvi isn't working then try just using the d-sub for now to see what's going on. Hope you're not fiddling with the VGA card while the PC is powered up.
 
Fixed LCD by randomly pressing some buttons on the side. I guess one of them changed it to digital.

But now, when booting up I can't get into bios. It first says something about express gateway and press any key. That quickly changes to an asus page with "del" for setup. Hit del and nothing happens. Then I get a quick "no HD detected" and then a "no keyboard connected" and finally it says no boot media found and that I should reboot or insert one.

The keyboard does flash on when the pc starts up. Is it just not picking up the keyboard or am I doing something wrong?
 
Goodness it's been quite a journey for you on this thing hey. I just built a pc over the weekend, took me an hour or so, runs beautifully now. Mind you the HDD was already working.

Ok try this: use the hard drive in your other pc as a primary boot device and make the new one the slave. See if that helps you get past bios. Or is it a laptop hdd?
 
Past bios? I can't get in to bios. Even if the HD wasn't connected properly or whatever, surely I'd still be able to get into the setup?
 
Ok, don't know why but the ps/2 didn't work but the USB connection did. So now I'm in bios and it does pick up my SATA DVD and HD. So I dunno what that "can't detect HD thing was all about. Will just poke around the settings in BIOS a bit more and then try again. With the windows 7 disc in?
