System build noob hits snafu

Having never even witnessed a system being built before, this might be a stupid question, but...

I have the Asus P5Q board and a Coolermaster Cosmos. The board came with no screws but the case has a bunch. However, the screws have like a wider shoulder section between the flat part and the end. So I can screw the board into the spacer but once the shoulder reaches the board that's as far as it goes. That means the flat part doesn't reach the board. It's just sticking out a good 5 centimeters or so.

Surely that can't be right?

Do I need to find different screws?
 
Good luck finding the right screws? Or good luck putting together the system, cos it'll be amazing if you don't screw it up?

Wrong screws.

Pop down to your nearest hardware or computer store and get the right screws.
 
What should I ask for? Just mention the board type?

BTW, I meant 5mm of course.
 
The spacer's should have screws that hold the mobo firmly in place. the bigger screws you are using are for screwing in the psu or drives

Your case should have come with a lot of screws and stand-offs. There are several different sizes of screw, and it sounds like you're using the hard drive screws to attach the mobo.
I looked at the manual on line (you did get a manual, right?), and it shows pictures of the various bits and what they're for.

You should screw the short stand-offs into the chassis - tight, but not too tight - at the places where your Asus mobo has holes. Then attach the mobo using the #6-32 screws (hex head with flange, no shoulder).

Good luck, and have fun! Just take sensible precautions against static - especially if you're on the highveld (low humidity and all that)
 
Doesn't look like Natalie Portman at all...

In the bag I can see three types of screws. The ones you tried, with the shoulder. Small round-head screws for stiffy drives. And the right ones - with hexagonal heads.
 
Yeah, for some reason I thought the #6-32 was for the HD. Thanks guys. If I pull this off it'll be a bloody miracle.

The firstborn child generates the most stress - likewise with building PCs.

Actually it's all pretty straightforward. One thing to watch out for when you're ready to power on: if you have a serious graphics card (I'm sure you do), don't forget to find the auxiliary power cable that goes into the inboard end of the card. Missed it on our last system build, to be greeted by a scary screeching - just the mobo's way of letting you know you've forgotten something... :o
 
Will try and keep that in mind. GPU and PSU only arrive next week.

bought same board a few months ago. no screws supplied at all. used old screws from previously installed mb.
