Ag crap, so it happened.

Win XP Pro (SP 2) crashed on my HP Notebook. As it is due for a reinstall in any case, I might as well just reformat and get it over and done with.

Now I need a BIG External HDD to transfer all my data to (none of my PC/Notebooks at home have enough capacity).

Where can I find one, as in today? I know Maxtor has a 250Gb one ... any ideas or what to look out for?

Thanks

I was actually thinking now to upgrade the Notebook drive in any case. Get a notebook HDD, with an ide converter, and when done, just pop the bigger one back in the notebook. Only problem: Notebook still under guarantee!

Maxtor 250GB MaxLine Plus II PATA Interface 7200rpm ; ULTRA 133 (8MB Buffer) R 939 .00 incl

Vantec NexstarII 3.5: External Encloure: NST350U2; USB 2.0 & USB 1.1; Hot-Swappble & Plug-n-Play; Compatible With Notebooks & PCs; Dimension: 210 X 135 X 40 mm R 349 .00 incl

Vantec Nexstar 2.5" External Enclosure: Support USB 2.0 & 1.1; Hot-Swappable & Plug-n-Play; Compatiable with 2.5" IDE Hard Drives; Powered by USB; Dimension: 130 x 75 x 12mm; Weight: 65g; Material: Aluminum Alloy R189 .00 incl

If you are wanting a 250Gb external HDD this is your best bet. Otherwise you can get and External case for the Laptop HDD and just plug that into a PC with a big HDD.

Shipping to your door next day is R29.00 incl

Ok, so what I did (Person, very much in line with your post)

Got the NexStar 3 2.5" external casing, bought a 100Gb Seagate Notebook drive. Popped the 100Gb into my notebook, and using the old 60Gb in the external casing ... works like a charm!

how does your seagate run... i bought the 80 gig recently... it seems to get very hot.. its that momentus high speed one!

TIP : If you has called this thread - Need Big External Hard Drive, you would have got a much better result.
Probably would have, but most guys/suppliers would only have been able to help me this morning, so I paid a bit more, but got it done yesterday

Honestly, I don't know :p
I have been moving data across between the two drives the whole morning, without the secondary fan coming on, so it seems to be ok ...

off-topic: i know you get all these funky system monitors (temps etc) for desktops, do they work on notebooks as well, or do you get specific ones for notebooks?

most work for notebooks too!!

um there is a program for the HDD tho... it reads the S.M.A.R.T info from the drive, so will work with all HDD's... it tells you some scary stuff!!!

http://www.panterasoft.com/download/hhealth.exe
Is this one only for the HDD, or for CPU, fan speed, etc as well?

EDIT: And the next obvious question, if not, which monitor program is the best/nicest/easiest to use?
